Sat, Mar 28, 09 - The Listener

02.00 The Listener

The Listener. Episode 3. "A Voice In The Dark" Kidnapped girl.

The stories are still pretty lame, but I still really like this show. Besides it reminds me of shows like Early Edition and The Pretender and most of the stories on them were pretty lame, too. And I loved those shows, particularly The Pretender.

There are other reasons to watch:

Craig Olejnik is a great leading man. He sells the idea of hearing people's thoughts and he's very likable and sympathetic. He's got that whole wounded dove thing going on, yet he's Alpha Male enough to carry to mild action sequences.

Toby Logan is a great lead character. His power is cool and the show doesn't overuse it. In fact, they underuse it and - when you think about it - it has very little impact on the stories. In this episode, the power is used to kick start the tale but after that it is of no use. The audience at home knows who the real bad guy is long before Toby cottons on to it. But, powers aside, I like the guy. His messed up love life, desire to help/save people and his mysterious past make him worth watching on a weekly basis.

Ennis Esmer is a great sidekick. Very likable and funny. He should get more screen time. At the end of this third episode Toby tells him his secret and this will hopefully increase his involvement in future stories. It's a good move. Also, it makes sense that Toby would have someone to talk to. He's needs a confidant so that the audience can hear his thoughts (ironically). This episode was just a lot of silly running around. Toby wandered around Toronto. Spied the mysterious street kid and chased after him. Only to lose him and return with a clue. This happened, what, three times in the hour. Hopefully future stories will avoid such idiotic storytelling by giving Toby somebody to share his thoughts with.

The Listener, Lisa Marcos

Lisa Marcos is crazy hot. And, whatever flaws the show may have, they are doing a great job of writing this particular character. Both Listener and Castle have paired the hero with intelligent female detectives who seem capable of solving crimes without the help of the lead guy. Too often shows fall into the trap of making the hero 'special' by making everyone around him dumb. So, I really like the approach of making both leads smart/special.

Help Jimmy Fallon reunite the cast of Saved By
The Bell - VIDEO

Filed under: Late Night, Daytime, Video, Children, Talk Show, Reality-Free

Saved By The BellI'm not sure if every TV fan would want this to happen, but Late Night host Jimmy Fallon wants to reunite the cast of the Saturday morning program Saved By The Bell.

The show will have its 20th anniversary this year (it actually started under a different title, Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which starred Hayley Mills - just that bit of info I have off of the top of my head means I know more about this show than I want to), and Fallon has started a petition to get the cast back together.

One cast member is already involved: Dennis Haskins, who played Principal Belding in all of the show's incarnations. He showed up on Fallon's show to give support for the effort (you can sign the petition at the link above).

'Chronicles' Ode to Charley

'Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles' Returns for Season 2By LillyKat
PTR Senior Staff Writer

Charley Dixon: R.I.P.

Thank you, Dean Winters.

The real Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles has finally stood up.

Bummer that we now have only two more eps in which to wonder: a) if season two is the last we'll see of the series; or, b) if we will be set-up for a third season. After lamenting the show's demise into mediocrity for several several mid-season eps, it's given us four solid episodes in a row. With Charley's return this week, it got even better.

Even if he didn't make it out alive.

Strangely, I was okay with that - which is a rarity given I genuinely DISlike when my fave characters meet their maker.

But Charley died protecting John - another sign of his devotion to the Connors.

And why he has always been one my favorite characters in the series.

He was the best thing to ever happen to Sarah and John. He believed in them wholeheartedly, cared for them genuinely, even bought the whole end of the world ticket - give or take a tense confusing moment or two, which included the death of his wife. To me, it was like having Kyle Reese around - a reminder of what is good and right with both Sarah and John, but also a reminder of the curse of their fate.

But Charley disappeared for most of this season.

And that was a mistake.

As we saw with this episode, it would've been better had he stuck around. We might have been spared the drippy dopey Sarah John Riley Jesse Tangentland route.

Charley wasn't a tangent.

He wasn't an unnecessary character.

He wasn't out of place.

He challenged Sarah.

He understood John.

He had depth.

He suffered.

He remained loyal, understanding and dedicated to the Connors.

He was, indeed, one of the very few people they could truly count on - and he didn't even come from the future.

I'm sorry that he won't be around anymore, but given the show's questionable status about being renewed, I find it fitting he was given a honorable death.

Now, there were other key elements in this week's ep that are setting up the finale quite nicely: John Henry went a little haywire after being hacked into from an outside source (read: there's another JH out there thanks to good ol' Myles Dyson's work); Derek and Cam having a heart to heart (okay, not really) about the fact Jesse was pregnant with Derek's baby in the future and miscarried upon her return from the doomed voyage of the Jimmy Carter; Cam going to rescue Derek after being tracked down by thugs working for the second JH (we think); Sarah realizing that whilst she doesn't have breast cancer as yet, she was implanted with a transmitter back during her kidnapping (you know, the confusing ep about what was real and what wasn't)

But really, this ep was about Charley for me.

And putting a great character to rest.

New episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles air Fridays at 8 p.m. on FOX. You can also watch full episodes online. Visit the Official Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Web site to catch up (or re-watch!)

Does "Based on True Events" Make You More
Interested in a Scary Movie

This weekend's release of The Haunting in Connecticut is supposedly based on the story of a real-life family that moved into a home only to find that it was formerly a funeral parlor and is now haunted.

When horror flicks are advertised as fictionalizing "true events," it inevitably sends me to the Internet for some answers. A lot of the time it turns out to be a pretty nebulous claim like in the case of The Strangers, which was marketed as being "inspired by a true story" but that turned out to be only semi-accurate.

So what do you think? In the case of scary movies, is it all the more intriguing when it's supposedly based on a true story?

THE HAT SQUAD: BOB ARBOGAST

Voice-over artist Bob Arbogast has passed away.

Mark Evanier writes of him:

"How to describe Arbogast? Bob Arbogast was a comedy writer, a radio personality, a voiceover specialist, a creator of funny commercials and a TV host...and even that doesn't begin to tell you who he was..... Among folks who do funny voiceovers, he was kind of a legend."

Arbogast did several voices for cartoon series, but also appeared in live action shows as well, including 'Mork And Mindy' and 'Mathnet'. And he also was a writer for 'The Nut House', a live-action pilot by Jay Ward.

Bob Arbogast's most famous Tooniverse character would probably be General G.I. Brassbottom of 'Roger Ramjet'.
