Secret Diary of a Call Girl: Episode 1-02

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, OpEd, Episode Reviews, Reality-Free

(S01E02) "Sometimes I get paid to do the things I've always wanted to do." -- Belle

Like have sex with old Scottish men who have a penchant for horses? No, wait, that was last week. This week Belle went to an exclusive adult party (think Eyes Wide Shut, but not as creepy) and meet her favorite author. She also got to wear a black wig (think Chicago) and some feathers around her neck (think Big Bird).

Check out my review of Secret Diary of a Call Girl after the jump. I promise, no more references.

Separated at Birth: UK Singing Soundalikes

It seems like you can't turn on the radio or surf the music blogs these days (or walk into a Starbucks, for that matter) without hearing a lady singer who is from the UK and sounds strikingly similar to Amy Winehouse or Lily Allen. It's as if all aspiring British female vocalists born between 1979 and 1991 were only given Dusty Springfield and Etta James records to listen to for inspiration.

Winehouse and Allen reintroduced the "soulful songstress with attitude and distinctive vocals" persona to the mainstream when they took the USA by storm a few years ago. However, they now appear to be imploding personally, leaving a hole in the genre that record labels have rushed to fill. I'm not complaining, as I happen to really enjoy this kind of music, but how to tell all this talent apart? There are a lot of 'em, and in addition to having similar musical styles, their names (er, um, "name," as the case may be for several of them) are hardly distinctive. It's confusing! For your benefit and mine, here's my attempt to break it all down:

New TV On DVD, June 24

In season two of "The New Adventures Of Old Christine" getting along with New Christine has gotten easier. Juggling work, motherhood, friends, an ex-husband, a slacker brother and the meanie moms at her son's school hasn't. Nor have affairs of the heart, as Christine wrestles with romances past, present and, she hopes, future. Also on DVD: seasons one of "Early Edition" and "Evening Shade."

Panasonic Cranking Out 37-Inch OLED TV's Within
Three Years, And They're Affordable

sony-skinny-tv.jpgJapanese rag Sankei Shimbun reported this morning that Panasonic will have 37-inch OLED TV's ready for sale sometime in the next 3 years. Amazingly, the 37-inch sets are expected to retail for around 150, 000 Yen when they hit Japan which equates to only $1390, nearly half of what Sony's 11-inch XEL-1 currently costs. Panasonic's OLED TV's will be produced at the IPS Alpha Technology factory in the Chiba Prefecture and could be the first mass produced OLED TV's over 30 inches although Sony recently invested $210 million to begin churning out 30-inch and larger panels by next year. This isn't just a bid by Panasonic to challenge Sony for domination in the young OLED TV market. The company says it's part of a strategy to challenge Samsung for domination in the overall flat panel market.Via OLED Display (Thanks, Erik!)

DLP 1080p Displays Put Together

planar_margayii.jpgRear-projection TV's may not be too hot for living room use these days, but when it comes to DLP cubes, they're all the rage. Check out the Planar Clarity Margay II DLP Cube, display at InfoComm 2008. It features 8 50-inch DLP rear projection displays, 2 across and 4 down, each 1920 x 1080 pixels, displaying a total pixel count of 3840 x 4320.
