New Jersey lawmakers don't like Jersey Shore

Jersey ShorePerhaps there is such a thing as bad publicity. New Jersey lawmakers are looking to cancel the MTV reality series Jersey Shore via a boycott of its advertisers. Mind you, MTV has been dealing with controversy since its inception (as has Jersey Shore), so this move is unlikely to cancel the series. If anything, given the anti-establishment vibe of the channel, it may even make it more popular. MTV should send the lawmakers a gift basket.

While I'm no fan of the show, it shouldn't be canceled in this manner. One can only hope that poor ratings contribute to its demise (although that's not likely at this stage).

This sort of end would only give those that support it more fuel for the fire. MTV might be facing less criticism if they had a more ethnically diverse cast for the show. On the other hand, the network might be seeking the criticism out like the attention-whore that it is in an effort to reinforce its reputation.

This according to a Twitter tweet from the company that specifically pointed out "early January 2010" as timing for the announcement. Numbers of Interest - Television Ratings for
Wednesday 12/23/09

On the day before Christmas Eve, there were repeats and very few people to watch them.

CBS won the night with Home for the Holidays With Faith Hill (1.1), Criminal Minds (2.0), and CSI: NY (2.1). CSI: NY usually does considerable worse than Criminal Minds, but it did better last night,

ABC was second with How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2.1), The Middle (1.8), Modern Family (1.9), The Middle (1.5), and Cougar Town (1.3, 1.1). Cougar Town stood on its own in the beginning, sometimes doing as well as Modern Family, but the numbers are quickly eroding. ABC has to wonder what would have happened if they had Better Off Ted in the time slot instead of Cougar Town.

Fox was third with Glee (1.2, 1.5).

NBC finished last with Mercy (0.8, 0.7) and The Jay Leno Show (1.1). Without a healthy lead in, Leno was crushed by repeats on CBS and ABC.

The Vatican loves The Simpsons

Who would have thought that the Pope and I could have been switched at birth, assuming I was born in some kind of time riff? It could happen.

The Vatican's newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, offered its congratulations to The Simpsons for reaching its 20th anniversary in an article titled "Aristotle's Virtues and Homer's Doughnut."

Why would the Vatican heap such praise on a show that has long made religion the butt of so many jokes? (My favorite is from The Simpsons Movie when Grandpa flips out during church and Marge asks Homer to do something and all Homer can do is flip through a Bible and scream, "I would but this book doesn't have any answers!" ) The newspaper says that Homer's attitude toward religion are "a mirror of the indifference and the need that modern man feels toward faith."

So I guess this means that the Protestant Church is going to give Family Guy their annual Martin Luther Award.
