The Big Bang Theory, Legend Of The Seeker,
Arrested Development, Parks And Recreation

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

07.00 The Big Bang Theory
07.30 Legend Of The Seeker
11.30 Arrested Development
12.00 Parks And Recreation

The Big Bang Theory. Season 3, Episode 4. "The Pirate Solution" Raj might have to return to India.

Kunal Nayyar carries the a-plot as Raj faces a return to India, unless he can find a new job. Lots of great scenes for him, most of them with Sheldon as he tries to work with/for his friend.

The show continues (unwisely, I feel) to the make the Leonard-Penny pairing a subject of stories as they try to find some alone-time away from Howard. I don't like the idea, in general, but I will admit that it was funny here.

Episode highlight, though: the montage to the Rocky music. Instant classic. Wow.

Legend Of The Seeker. Episode 16. "Bloodline" Richard's mother and sister.

Another superb episode, with enough story for two hours. Richard's mother appears. And, before he can speak with her, dies. That shocked me, but - at least - he gains a sister before the closing credits.

Jessica Marais returns, and Denna continues to be one of the best characters on the show.

Arrested Development. Season 3, Episode 11. "Family Ties" Justine Bateman

Another high-point in the history of AD: the casting of Justine Bateman. Not only that, but casting her as someone with romantic tension with Michael. "That is weird on so many levels."

Parks And Recreation. Season 2, Episode 5. "Sister City" The group from Venezuela.

Awful. Not funny. A group shows up, insults everyone and everything relentlessly for the whole episode and it all ends with an awful pro-American bit.

Awful. Worst episode so far.

Highlight? The Big Bang Theory (Rocky montage)

THE TOOBWORLD TIMELINE: THE KIDNAPPING OF JOHN
ADAMS

In the 'Daniel Boone' episode "Take The Southland Stage", President John Adams was kidnapped in Philadelphia and held for ransom. First Lady Abigail Adams asked Boone to handle the ransom demands, but he was able to rescue the President, subdue the kidnappers, and keep hold of the money.

This is one of those "historical events" that never happened in the real world, but can easily be accepted in Toobworld - because of national security, all of the details were kept secret.

Adams had already been in Philadelphia where the first Presidential mansion was located. But he had gone to the Hotel Adelphia to give an old friend of his some bad news: Congress refused to hear Colonel Anthony Bedlow's claim to keep his plantation, which had been taken away from him due to some legal technicality. Colonel Bedlow claimed that he would have gone to see the President, but he had allegedly broken his leg in a fall from a horse. (Actually, this was a ruse and Bedlow turned out to be the mastermind behind the abduction.)

As he was taking his leave of Bedlow, President Adams (played by Torin Thatcher) mentioned that he had to be back in Washington for the dedication of the new White House. (He was the first resident President.)

Now, John Adams didn't move into the White House until November 1st, 1801, a Saturday. He only lived there until March 4th, 1801, when Jefferson became the third President of the United States. As the weather seems pleasant enough in the episode, I'm going to assume that the events of the kidnapping took place in the last week of October, and that the dedication of the White House would be highlighted by Adams taking up residence there. (Although apparently there was no ceremony upon his moving in, according to historical accounts.)

Boone was told to take the stage that was leaving for Baltimore on a Thursday. I think that means he left on October 23rd, and that the actual kidnapping probably happened on Monday the 20th. This would give Abigail Adams enough time to make the arrangements to meet with Daniel Boone, most likely on Wednesday the 22nd. (The First Lady would not move into the White House until a few weeks after her husband had already settled in.) Here's another historical twist: Adams refers to the new residence in Washington as "the White House" (with an odd inflection, as if the term was not yet common usage). However, the public didn't start calling it by that name until 1811, according to historical records. So there's yet another difference that separates Toobworld from the Trueniverse.

Scrubs, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Arrested
Development, The Office

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

05.30 Scrubs
06.00 Dexter
07.00 Breaking Bad
08.00 Arrested Development
01.00 The Office

Scrubs. Season 8, Episode 12. "Their Story II" The new characters get to narrate an episode.

Where did Lee Thompson Young come from? While I have grown to like most of the new characters and welcome the idea of giving them an episode to narrate, I'm a bit thrown by the fact that Derek (Lee Thompson Young) never appeared before and is given a lot to do in this, his first, episode. I didn't really warm to him, but some of the other stuff was good.

Dexter. Season 4, Episode 3. "Blinded By the Light" The one with the neighbours.

A complete departure from the usual type of episode as we get introduced to a large group of new characters and we see Dexter trying to solve a vandalism problem on his doorstep. There's a twist in the end of the story and - overall - it feels like a worthwhile change-of-pace episode.

Breaking Bad. Episode 7. "A No-Rough-Stuff Type Deal" Walt and Jesse perform a robbery and Skyler discovers that her sister is thief.

As a regular episode this one is typically great, but as a season finale I find it somewhat lacking and undramatic. Nothing about this screams End Of Season, but everything about it makes me want to see what happens next...

Arrested Development. Season 3, Episode 10. "Fakin' It" Mock Trial.

Another of the great ideas of AD: Judge Reinhold playing himself, as the host of reality-type court show.

Episode highlight? George Michael and Maeby get married. Aw...

The Office. Season 6, Episode 5. The "Mafia" visits Michael.

Not really. This is a very silly, but very funny episode of The Office. Some fans don't like it when the show departs from reality too much, but this episode made me laugh and I loved it.

Leaving Jim and Pam out of an episode seems dumb, though. Couldn't they episode have started with them returning from honeymoon?

Highlight? Breaking Bad (typically great)

AS SEEN ON TV: MEYER LANSKY

Recently, Joseph Wiseman, best known for playing "Dr. No", passed away. One of his major roles in Toobworld was that of Manny Weisbrod on 'Crime Story'. The character of Manny was based on Meyer Lansky.....
MEYER LANSKY
AS SEEN IN:
"Lansky"

AS PLAYED BY:
Richard Dreyfuss
Meyer Lansky (born Meyer Suchomlanski) (July 4, 1902 ? January 15, 1983; known as the "Mob's Accountant") was a Jewish-American organized crime figure who, along with his associate Charles "Lucky" Luciano, was instrumental in the development of the "National Crime Syndicate" in the United States. Lansky developed a gambling empire which stretched from Saratoga, New York to Miami and Las Vegas; it is also said that he oversaw gambling concessions in Cuba. He was appointed by Fulgencio Batista y Zaldívar. Although a member of the Jewish Mafia, Lansky undoubtedly had strong influence with the Italian Mafia and played a large role in the consolidation of the criminal underworld (although the full extent of this role has been the subject of some debate).
