AS SEEN ON TV: GEORGE WASHINGTON

February 22nd used to be celebrated in the United States as Washington's Birthday as a holiday, until they decided to combine his day with Lincoln's birthday (February 12th) and celebrate them together on some convenient Monday in February (the one between the two dates? Not sure.) as Presidents' Day. (I think Martin Van Buren was kvetching about being overlooked.)

(February 22nd is also my grandfather's birthday. I never knew him; he died before my parents even met. So I'm not clear on details like how old he would have been, but he'd have to be over one hundred years of age if he was still alive. But because he was born on this day, he was given "George" as a middle name; and as I'm the third to bear the name in full, it's mine as well.)

So for today's "As Seen On TV" we have George Washington as he looked in the 'Bewitched' episode "George Washington Zapped Here".
He was brought forth into the 20th Century by a magic spell cast by Esmerelda. And I said "forth" rather than "forward" because according to the plot, he wasn't plucked out of the Toobworld timeline but from a picture book. This is how we can splain away the fact he is a recastaway. (I'd have to check my files, but I don't think I've settled on an official portrait of George Washington for Toobworld yet. However, I think Barry Bostwick might end up being my choice .)

George Washington was played by Will Geer - seen here also in another colonial role, from 'The Young Rebels'.
And this "As Seen On TV" is going out to my cousin Marilee, who celebrated her wedding anniversary yesterday. She was the one who suggested the 'Bewitched' version of our first president.....

'Chronicles' is on Snooze Control

'Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles' Returns for Season 2By LillyKat
PTR Senior Staff Writer

Zzzzzzzzzz.

Oh, my dearest Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles ... what has happened to you these days?

Where is the excitement? The passion? The intensity? The suspense?

Zzzzzzzzzz.

I hate to admit it, but this week's ep was a snoozer. We could've started at about the 45 or 50 minute mark given the whole thing played like one big filler for time - in the worst way.

We remember that big ol' explosion from last week's episode (when the Shirley-meister sent the Skynet-in-disguise heating and air conditioning factory down in a blaze of glory)? Well, this week had a long, drawn out remembrance ceremony for ALL the victims, which Sarah and Co "crashed" so as to try an get an inside track on what in the world was really going on at the plant (which, of course, wasn't really a heating and air conditioning factory - and the ENTIRE town knew it but looked the other way).

This lead to one insanely long funeral procession for one guy who's dead, but not really, but then probably is and/or is living in the house Big Brother built.

Read: the first incarnation of how Skynet work camps are set up.

'kay, good to know.

But it took us the WHOLE episode to figure that out?

Or to see the mystery, "three dot" flying saucer machine emerge from the town's seemingly poisonous water hole only to fly itself into the back of an 18-wheeler's trailer and be carted off to Lord knows where?

No John Henry?

Two seconds with Shirley and Agent Ellison?

I'm starting to understand why only about 3.5 million or so people are still watching this show.

It has lost so much zip from what gripped us in the first season that it now seems like some sort of emo drama on FOX. The killing off of Cromartie was potentially the series ending point, and even though they got picked up for a full second season order and have brought back Garret Dillahunt as John Henry (thankfully), I don't know if they've come back CREATIVELY from terminating the machine who was the constant, menacing reminder of the fight to save the world - and what the Connors are really all about.

Plainly, I just don't know if they have enough story and character development left to keep it interesting.

To say its return has been underwhelming is an understatement.

New episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles air Fridays at 8 p.m. on FOX. You can also watch full episodes online. Visit the Official Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Web site to catch up (or re-watch!)

Number Crunching: This Week's TV Ratings

  • Not chuck-ling. Uh-oh: One episode after it scored season-best ratings, Chuck dipped to an all-time low on Monday with just 6.75 million viewers.
  • Rebounding. Maybe Chuck can take some inspiration from Lost. After facing an all-time low last week, Lost rebounded with 11.3 million viewers this week.
  • Eastbound down, but Conchords flies. HBO's Eastbound and Down was barely on the radar with just over 670,000 viewers for its premiere on Sunday. But in better news, Flight of the Conchords hit a season high with about 826,000 viewers.
  • Back in the house. Bravo's The Real Housewives of New York City season premiere set a new series record, drawing 1.6 million viewers. The finale of this season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, which aired right before it, pulled in 2 million viewers.
  • Idol of the ratings race. American Idol's ratings for its first week of live voting were down a bit from last year, but it was still tough for anything else to compete: Tuesday's singing show averaged 25.1 million viewers, while Wednesday's results brought in 24.4 million.
