AS SEEN ON TV: BUTCH CASSIDY (& THE SMILING KID)

AS SEEN ON:
'Stories Of The Century'

AS PLAYED BY:
Joe Sawyer

Butch Cassidy (13 April 1866 ? circa 7 November 1908), born Robert LeRoy Parker, was a notorious American train robber, bank robber and leader of the Hole in the Wall Gang.
(from Wikipedia) Here he's seen with "The Smiling Kid", with whom he escaped down to Uruguay, where of course Matt Clark once again caught up with them. The Smiling Kid should be recognizable as the great Slim Pickens.

Sylar wants to save arcades

QuintoI know, I know, maybe I should have said "Mr. Spock wants to save arcades," but readers probably wouldn't know if I was talking about Leonard Nimoy or Zachary Quinto, so Sylar it is.

Quinto is trying to help Stride Gum with a special promotion to help raise money to save four old arcades. They've set up a web site where you can help too.

I didn't even realize that old school arcades were on the decline. Sure, I knew that home video game consoles are more popular than ever (I have a Playstation II and a Blu-ray player that plays games myself), but I thought they would still fill a niche for kids. Guess kids would rather stay at home or at their friend's home than go to an arcade. I remember when I was in my teens/early 20s I went to the arcade quite a bit. My game was Millipede.

Do people still bowl?

Rifftrax Live scores a coast-to-coast success

Th Rifftrax crew take on Plan 9 from Outer Space live on an LA stage in 2008.The first nationally-broadcast live Rifftrax event successfully piped a horrible movie and plenty of witty banter into more than 400 movie theaters coast to coast Thursday night.

Originating from Nashville, Tenn., Michael J. Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy went all Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space before a live audience.

With only a couple technical glitches that delayed the hilarity for a few seconds here or there, Fathom Events broadcast the event to movie theaters nationwide, allowing thousands of fans to experience a successful riff live and more or less in-person.

Are You Interested in Seeing Ray Romano on TV
Again

We were just talking about Seinfeld's upcoming reappearances on TV, and while most of you are looking forward to seeing Seinfeld again, some of you are over it. I was recently reading this piece about Penelope Ann Miller joining Ray Romano's new series, Men of a Certain Age on TNT, and it struck me that here we have another former comedian-turned-sitcom-star returning to the airwaves.

I wasn't as big a fan of Everybody Loves Raymond as I was of Seinfeld, so I'm personally feeling pretty neutral about seeing Romano on TV again, but I know he has plenty of fans out there who will be excited for his return.

What do you think? Are you looking forward to seeing Romano on the small screen once more?

Michael And Michael Have Issues, In Plain Sight,
Burn Notice

Friday, August 21st, 2009

06.30 Michael And Michael Have Issues
07.00 In Plain Sight
08.00 Burn Notice

Michael And Michael Have Issues. Episode 2. "Biederman's Birthday" Buying drugs.

A much stronger plot than episode 1, and a much funnier episode. Michael Ian Black's attempt to buy drugs in the park leads to his arrest and sets up the comedy highlights for later in the episode: Black shows up at the home of Michael Showalter at 4am (Michael Showalter ran out on him during the arrest) for a 'friendly chat', and - even funnier - Black then forces Showalter to attempt a middle-of-the-night drug buy. The buy goes great, but there are other unexpected results...

In Plain Sight. Season 2, Episode 14. "Once a Ponzi Time" A rich guy joins Witsec and gives all his money away. For this, Mary calls him a 'dumb ass'.

Once again, here's a great story that could only be told on In Plain Sight. James Frain (who was great on 24) plays a formerly wealthy man who tries to live a simple life. His wife vows to stand by him. That, in itself, is the makings of an interesting story. But it doesn't quite work out and the story of how it all plays out instead has several twists, the last of which is a real doozy. Even though the 'clue' was there, I totally didn't predict it. Nice work Alexander Cary and John Mankiewicz.

As much fun as the story is, there is even more fun to be had from watching Mary deal with her partner and her boyfriend. Now that Rafael knows what her job is, it opens up a whole new set of problems. One of them being her partner's unhappiness that she told his secret too... The other one being Rafael's ability to stop anyone else from finding out.

The episode end with a great conversation between Mary and her partner. Everything is painful and vague. Something the show does really well. And something which contrasts really well with their great case-of-the-week stories.

One of the best shows on TV.

Burn Notice. Season 3, Episode 9. "Long Way Back" There's a guy in town who wants to kill Fiona.

There are about twenty things in any given episode of BN that are great. And one of the best is the troubled Michael-Fiona relationship. Making her "the client" for an episode is just what the show needed right now (as she prepares to leave town, and walk out of Michael's life).

Two of this season's recurring characters meet their end in this episode (one of them dies by Michael's hand in a very satisfying scene) and it's pretty much one of the strongest episodes the show has delivered. In a season that has been, without doubt, the best one yet.

Episode highlights? Anytime the script (by Craig S. O'Neill) calls for Jeffrey Donovan and Gabrielle Anwar to gaze into one anther's eyes with love and passion and pain and confusion...

Highlight? Burn Notice (Michael and Fiona)

Bill O'Reilly answers Jon Stewart

Yesterday, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show had a little fun with FOX News, saying the way that they're covering the town hall protests makes them sound like liberals. Well, last night, Bill O'Reilly turned the tables on Stewart and gave him a little bit of his own medicine. You decide who's being more fair and balanced.

Notes From The Underbelly, The Unusuals, Kojak,
Barney Miller

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

06.00 Notes From The Underbelly
06.30 The Unusuals
01.00 Kojak
02.00 Barney Miller

Notes From The Underbelly. Season 2, Episode 4. "Not Without My Noodles"

"Women are crazy, men are wimps" is the underlying theme of this show, it seems. But, as off-putting as I find that, I have to say the show can be very funny. Sometimes.

This is a funny episode. There are two plots. One tied nicely into the premise of the show, and another one which could be used on any situation comedy.

The friendship between Lauren and Cooper (my favourite character, and the funniest character) shows major strains as Lauren gets more and more involved in the world of babies and all that lark. Rachael Harris and Jennifer Westfeldt are very funny (particularly Rachael Harris) and Leslie Grossman is a great guest star, as Cooper's spur-of-the-moment revenge-friend.

While all of that stuff is going on, Lauren's husband is involved in a plot that could be used on any sit-com: his friends (and series regulars) Julie and Eric hire him to work for them, which leads to all sorts of 'hilarious' conflict. This plot only really works if you buy the fact that Julie is flat-out crazy and Eric is too much of a wimp to assert himself and calm her down. It's fine. The best bit of this plot is the final seconds of it. A nice twist, and funny.

The Unusuals. Episode 8. "The Dentist" Alvarez is in charge when the precinct is robbed. Banks gives up on the outside world and decides to stay in his appartment full time.

Back on form. Jorge Zamacona's script is one of the best the show has used. Delahoy is side-lined (boo!) but this is still an A+ episode all the way. The two stories are superb and the writer knows how to present Alvarez and Banks in an interesting way and make us care about them.

The amazing David Costabile makes a very welcome guest appearence. This guy morphs from role to role so you really have to be alert to spot him. I hope somebody builds a TV around him soon.

Kojak. Season 2, Episode 12. "The Best War in Town" Rookie Cop stumbles into the middle of mob hit, which leads Kojak and the squad into the middle of a complex war for territory.

Written by Burton Armus, and directed by Richard Donner, this is a truly superb episode of Kojak.

When you watch this you get three things: a strong story of a mob war, a strong character study of Theo Kojak, and character sketch on a guest character.

The plot involves what appears to be a turf war between two mob lieutenants, but - from the viewers perspective - is actually a clever outsider trying to play two factions against one another. We know this. But the detectives in the story have no reason to suspect it until the story is nearly over. Very enjoyable storytelling from start to finish.

Mark Shera guests as a young cadet, reporting for his first day in Kojak's squad room when he walks into the middle of a mob hit. He tries to help, but makes mistakes and an innocent woman is killed by the hitmen's getaway car. As the story unfolds we get to see his indecision over whether to remain with the police or not, as he battles with Kojak and battles with his mother and - in the end of the story - puts his life on the line to see justice done.

The character of Kojak dominates this episode as he investigates the mob way and deals with the young police cadet who wandered into the middle of the mess on his first day on the job. Kojak isn't particularly nice to him. In fact, he spends most of the episode treating the kid like an annoyance that must be dealt with. And when they do speak they tend to yell at one another. Some of these scenes (particularly the one in the young guy's apparement) are superb. Dramatic stuff at it's best. Telly Savalas blows everybody off the screen, of course, but Mark Shera does a damn fine job of standing toe to toe with him.

If you never saw Kojak before, this is a great place to start. When this hour is over, you will see him in all his glory, and with all his 'flaws' on display. If you watch this you will understand why I've loved this character since I was a kid. He's not going hard on the kid to make him a better cop, or anything like that, he's going hard on him because he made mistakes. And there's more to it than that. It's part of who Kojak is.

Great stuff.

Barney Miller. Episode 12. "Hair" Scruffy new cop joins the squad, while Bernice shows up to check on Fish.

Another episode where the regulars cope with an outsider in their midst. Barney enforces the dress code, for instance, as means towards making the new guy conform. Turns out that under his big beard he sports a baby face.

Bernice, meanwhile, shows up (again) and we discover that Fish visited a massage parlour that afternoon.

It's a good solid episode. Nothing spectacular. Things take a very dramatic turn at the very end when two of the cops are injured in a shoot out. So, the flavour of the show is captured but not really showed off in all it's glory.

Highlight? Kojak (truly superb)
