Curb Your Enthusiasm preview: Larry David vs.
Plastic

Oh, we've all been there. It happened to me a few months ago when I bought a new set of head phones. I almost sliced my hand off trying to open the plastic packaging surrounding the head phones. I'm glad that the company makes these things so SECURE, but opening a package shouldn't require sharp objects, the strength of Lou Ferrigno, and Band-Aids.

Season 7 of Curb Your Enthusiasm starts on September 20.

Is an Apple HDTV on the way

appletv.jpgProlific Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster believes that Apple will launch a full blown HDTV with built-in digital media recording capabilities by 2011. And how will this vision play out? Munster says it'll go something like this:

  • Apple will release a new Apple TV set-top box soon with a TV input a built-in DVR. This would tie in to a subscription-based service for its iTunes TV content.
  • An iTunes TV Pass within the year that will leverage Apple's cable network relationships and content library. Consumers would have unlimited access to a sub-library of cable content for a flat fee of $30-$40 per month.
  • An Apple TV set within two years that will be able to wirelessly sync with iPhones, iPods, and iPod Touch's.

Munster continues to go on to argue that Apple's partnership with LG to produce LCD displays and a variety of digital video recording-related patents further support an Apple TV.

Personally I'm on the fence about this one. With budget HDTV brands such as Vizio producing quality sets on the cheap, this might be a tough market for Apple to break into. Especially given its premium pricing strategy. Pioneer had the bestplasma TVs around--still do really--but pulled out of the business because the high prices it charged didn't enable it to grab enough market share.

Then again, if any company could pull off a premium pricing strategy in what is quickly becoming a commodity market, Apple would be it.

Firefly's Gina Torres joins Gossip Girl as a
'free spirit'

gina torress gossip girl fireflyUnlike our own Jane Boursaw, I've yet to dive head first into the trashy teen world of The CW's Gossip Girl. I'm sure this comes as a surprise to no one, since my favorite shows tend to take place on spaceships or feature brooding vampires. But a recent addition to the cast might get me to start watching the saucy soap for the first time when it returns in September; one of my favorite sci-fi actors, Firefly alum Gina Torres, has signed on to play the recurring role of Gabriela Abrams, Vanessa's mother.

Gabriela is described as a warm and outgoing free spirit from Brooklyn who has been hiding out in Vermont. The show's privileged teens are in for one hell of a season if Gabriela is anything like Jasmine, Torres' duplicitous character from the fourth season of Angel. It's probably not crazy to think that Gabriela will have some kind of edge to her. I've heard some of the parents on Gossip Girl make Lucille Bluth look like Mrs. Cunningham.

Torres is set to appear in two episodes and expected to recur throughout the series. Gossip Girl's season premiere airs Sept. 14.

A&E Going Forward With Jackson Bros. Reality Show

Before Michael Jackson died, A&E was apparently planning a TV show that would reunite Michael with his brothers, but Michael wouldn't agree to it and he died before A&E could pursue the idea further. The pilot episode that has already been filmed will air within the month, and now it looks like the network will still try to make a series out of it that will "chronicle the Jackson brothers' lives and show them grappling with Michael's death."

This seems a little bit sad and unnecessary, but surely there are many viewers who will tune in to see how the Jackson siblings are doing after Michael's death. Are you curious about this family now that their famous brother is gone? Or is this just exploiting MJ's death even more?

New promo for Nip/Tuck ties up some loose strings

With part one of Nip/Tuck's sixth and final season right around the corner (it moves from Tuesdays and premieres on Wednesday, October 14th), I've been waiting for the new promos to start. To be honest, Nip/Tuck's promos never really grabbed me in the past, but after last season's extremely well put together ad featuring "Flashing Lights" by Kanye West, I had high hopes for the next one and FX hasn't disappointed.

The newest promo, titled "Couture," features the song "2 Man Show" by Timbaland and once again involves an extremely intricate choreographed sequence with all sorts of seamstresses stitching and tying something up. It ends with some pretty cool imagery too as Sean and Christian tie something (someone?) up too - very similar to the season four art where the two of them were literally "building" a woman.

Perhaps all the strings are a nod to the fact that the show itself is wrapping up soon? (Only 19 episodes remain in the drama's run.) Check it out for yourself.

The cast is complete for the new and improved()
Scrubs

Kerry BisheIn Bill Lawrence's interview with our own Joel Keller, he said: "There's going to be a new young lady with a voice over and she's either going to be funny and talented and great, or the show's gonna crater."

Well, now we know who that young lady is and I'm sure Kerry Bishe (Virtuality) will be thrilled to find out that Lawrence is hinging the entire success of Scrubs 2.0 on her. No pressure! She joins Dave Franco, cast earlier this week, and Michael Mosley to complete the new faces of Scrubs (Med School?).

Besides being the new narrative voice for the show, and presumably the lead, Bishe will be a 22-year old first-year med student. She's the first in her family of fisherman to go to college. Mosley, the other new cast member signed today, is ten years older than the rest of the students, the result of a major meltdown a decade earlier when he was at Harvard. So this is his second chance.

Eli Roth Says Part of the Basterds Prequel Is
Already Done

Inglourious Basterds hits theaters tomorrow, and a couple weekends ago I attended the press junket to hear from a few of the film's stars. Yesterday we shared BJ Novak's interview, and now here's more from Eli Roth. His experience was unique coming to the movie as a friend of Quentin Tarantino's and an accomplished director in his own right. Roth tried his hand at acting, but he also got behind the camera to direct movie-within-a-movie Nation's Pride, which is a Nazi propaganda film that plays an integral role in Basterds. Here's some of what Eli had to say:

  • On a possible prequel: When Quentin writes, he knows every character in this movie, so he might do the Inglourius Basterds prequel - he?s got most of it written. Brad and I were always like "Prequel! Prequel! Prequel!" So we filmed [my character's backstory], but Quentin said, "I gotta tell you, I love those scenes, but you have the coolest entrance in the movie and it?s just taking away from it." And I was like "Well I don?t want to ruin the grand entrance." He?s like "You have Brad Pitt AND Hitler introducing you! So, you?re set up pretty good in this movie." He says he already has three scenes from the prequel done already. So we may see them someday.
  • On making the movie as a Jewish actor: I think the death of a lot of these WWII movies is that they get so caught up in the details of being so reverential and precious to the subject matter that they don?t realize how absurd it is to have British people running concentration camps with those accents. There are people speaking in English in these "historically accurate movies." I?m like, what the f*** was that? When my relatives were getting killed I don?t think they heard any English. It?s also important to remember what happened and to make sure it never happens again. It should upset us. If I saw a a swastika and I wasn?t upset that?s where there is a problem. When you go on a set and you know it?s a movie, it?s not like driving through a neighborhood and seeing a swastika painted. That?s where I get really upset. But I will say this, the first time I showed Nation?s Pride to 300 Nazi extras, even though they were in character, my stomach turned. I looked at Quentin and was like, "Oh my god, what have I done? I?ve started the fourth Reich and they're going to make me their Sarah Palin."

To hear more from Eli, including whether he prefers acting or directing, just read more.

  • On expectations and Tarantino films: Quentin always says that his movies take a couple of viewings to get used to, because people have very specific expectations. If you think about Quentin - he?s continually defied expectations. After Pulp Fiction, nobody expected Jackie Brown and it took people a while to get into the rhythm of it. Quentin said with Kill Bill, the reviews were terrible; everyone says, "Where?s the great Tarantino dialogue?" Then in Kill Bill 2 it was all dialogue and he got bad reviews because everyone asked for the great action from Kill Bill. The challenge of [Basterds] is how to sell it in a 30-second TV spot. We could sit here and talk for two hours and it would be difficult to categorize what the film is, because it?s so many different things and Quentin said, every chapter change, every 20 minutes he wants people saying, "Wait a minute, what movie are we in?"
  • On acting vs. directing: I actually prefer directing. I mean I love acting, but I get an incredible thrill out of having an idea in my head and seeing people connect to it . . . or throw up from it. The truth is, I did love acting and it was really really fun, but it was a special circumstance. Quentin said "You have another career here if you want it. You are killing it. You?re hitting it out of the park, you really are." And I said, "Well, how am I going to top this experience?" And he said, "Well you might not, but now you have permission to write great parts for yourself." And that is something I think I would do.
  • On working with his friend Taratino: I know that people are grading me on an extra hard curve. They know I?m friends with Quentin and they know that I?m a director, but I had to very quickly earn the respect of the audience. And it couldn?t be just from lifting weights. People had to see that it's real - that pain, and that anguish and that furor in his eyes as soon as he comes out with a bat. That he just has this murderous rage to kill these Nazis. I really pushed myself like I never have before. In a strange way I think when I come out people are expecting something brutal and we make sure to deliver that in the very first scene.
