Family & friends say farewell to Frankie

frankie1.jpgfrankie2.jpg

Services will be take place tomorrow morning at 10:30 at the Webb-Freer Funeral Home in Blue Springs, Missouri, for Frankie Abernathy, the housemate from The Real World: San Diego who died Saturday at 25.Frankie was the pierced, tattooed, Hello Kitty-loving, boat-fearing emotional cutter who happened to have cystic fibrosis. She's thought to be the second Real World castmember to die, joinig Pedro Zamora, who died of AIDS in 1994."It was a very quick thing," her mother says. "She was fine Friday, and I went down to see what she wanted for dinner. She was taking a nap, I thought. And she was dead."I don't think she had any regrets. She had a lot more stories at 25 than I have at 47. She lived pretty good. She had a lot to cram in."Meanwhile, some of Frankie's San Diego housemates have reacted to the news: Jacquese Smith: "She opened my eyes to a lot of things that I'd never even thought about before. Like cystic fibrosis-- you always hear about it, but don't know what it is. Frankie took me to my first punk-rock show. I had my first mosh-pit experience with Frankie. She would do any and everything if you asked her to. She was never scared to go anywhere with me. She was willing to learn from me. We had totally different life experiences, and we still got so close. If I learned anything from anyone on that show, I learned the most from Frankie. And I now have a greater appreciation for my life and my castmates. "I've been beating myself up over this, because I hadn't spoken with her in so long. We haven't really talked to one another in so long, so it's kind of like we lost her and now we're re-establishing our friendships and appreciating what we have with one another and taking full advantage of it. We're kind of doing what she would want us to do. It's just sad that this was the reason why we've gotten back in touch. At the end of the day, I know she knows I loved her."Jamie Chung: "She came off as too cool for school, but really, she kind of played off this attitude that she didn't care about any of us, but she was the most caring person in the house. She was the most outgoing. She stood out, and she loved that, and she didn't care what anyone thought. And I thought that was so cool. She just didn't give a fuck what people thought about her. She just did what she wanted to do, and she did what was fun and always wanted to go try different things. I don't think they showed that much. They showed all of the house drama and her personal issues. But she was a really fun person."She loved her family, and the one person that I am sure is just devastated is her little sister, Mamie. She idolized Frankie and was so proud of her. It's just crazy. She was sort of like Sid Vicious-- she just lived every day to the fullest, because she knew she had to. That was her motto. She lived every day as if it were her last."I'm thinking about her a lot. It's really sad, and it's really weird. It just came out of nowhere. I feel like a bad friend. The one person I should have kept in touch with, I didn't."Cameran Eubanks: "The way Frankie dealt with her disease, it was always something where she was prepared. She was never the kind of girl who was scared of the fact that she knew she was going to die early. She knew it. She told us. She said, 'You guys can look ahead to the rest of your lives, but I can't. I have to have my fun, I have to be young, and I have to live every day as if it's my last.' She had that kind of mentality. It was never like, 'Poor me, I'm going to die.' She was never that kind of girl. And I think that's what's made it easier for me to handle, I guess."Your average person, when they would meet Frankie, they would totally write her off as some crazed, in-your-face, ridiculous girl who has this disease and doesn't take care of herself. That's how I felt when I first met her. Then I got to know her, and realized that was all a show, and that's how she coped with it. I want everyone to know what a good person she was, what a rare person she was. She loved life, and we'll all miss her."A scholarship fund has been established in Frankie's name at Blue Springs High School. Fox Reality is Looking for the Next Elvira

Dress goth? Need a job? Fox Reality wants you for one of the more hilarious reality shows I've heard about recently.

The network is plotting "The Search for the Next Elvira," which will start Oct. 13 and end on Halloween. Apparently the Mistress of the Dark is getting tired of being so in-demand, and she's looking for "evil handmaiden" to help out.

I'd chalk this up to a look-alike contest better suited for ABC's dismal "The Next Best Thing" if the press release weren't so delightfully campy. (And hey, it's on Fox Reality, so most of us won't be subjected to it anyway.) Among my favorite details:

  • The show is holding an "Open Casket Call" in Los Angeles on (when else?) Friday, July 13
  • An "unlucky 13" participants will be chosen for the finals, while the others will "rest in peace."
  • According to the Hollywood Reporter, the producers say they "began dreaming of a world in which there would eventually be legions of franchised Elviras, including one in every shopping-mall atrium in the country each Halloween season."

Well, that outfit sure will make the kiddos cry ...

My Conumdrum

I have an unnatural fear of the undead. Really, they freak the living day lights out of me. Yet, I love zombie movies - 28 days later, Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil. We watch 28 days later on my request tonight. Guess who's too freaked out to sleep?

A nice comment

I received this comment from a friend of mine about my "Rough Crossing" review.

"Yeah Jen, you hit the nail on the head with your review. I have to say that my favorite part of this play was definitely "Murphy", without him nothing would have made any sense and the play would not have been as funny as it was."

Thank you, Amy. I appreciate it.

Yeah, Jericho is staying.

I posted this last week on my MySpace blog:

Yeah, Jericho stays
Current mood: excited

I'm so excited! Jericho is staying. That's what 50,000 pounds of nuts and a recount of streaming video and DVR hits can do for a show. First it was going to be a two-hour movie to wrap up the show. That offer became 8 episodes and now, EW is reporting a full season of 22 episodes.

Ok, people, we got Jericho back - so watch it. Watch it because you love to hate it. Watch it because its absurd. Watch it so the ratings will stay, it will stay on TV and I'll be a happy person.

"Scrubs" Fans: Laverne Will Return... Kinda

I'm not above admitting I shed a few tears when sassy, cranky Laverne passed away on "Scrubs" last season, especially when it came to Carla struggling with her grief. My assumption at the time was that the actress who played Laverne, Aloma Wright, had been offered some other gig, and that's why she was leaving the show.

Not so! Apparently, creator Bill Lawrence had assumed the 2006-2007 season would be the final one for "Scrubs," so he wrote a death into the storyline to shake things up a bit. But even back when Lawrence was killing off Aloma's character, he promised Aloma he'd bring her back if the show were renewed. Now that the show is alive (har har) for one more season, Lawrence is keeping his word and bringing Aloma Wright back on board ? as Laverne's twin sister, Shirley (yup, the sisters names are Laverne and Shirley).

Shirley's character is vastly different from Laverne's: She's an unmarried alcoholic who's not a religious believer like her late Bible-toting twin sister was. I can't wait to see Laverne again! Even if it's not really Laverne.

Kyle XY: The Prophet (season premiere)

Filed under: Kyle XY, NYTVF, Episode Reviews

Kyle XY(S02E01) When TV Squad asked us to list what we would watch over the summer, I struggled to find something else than reality TV as I don't get all the nifty cable channels. After seeing that ABC would air most, if not all, episodes of Kyle XY, I decided to give the show a shot as I heard only good things about it.

In order to prepare myself for the Season 2 premiere, I bought the Season 1 DVD and had a little XY marathon. Of course, I got hooked and couldn't wait for the premiere to get answers, especially when, in one of the DVD extras, the people behind the show promised me tons of answers early in the season.

The people behind the show didn't lie to me.

Hidden Palms: Party Hardy

Hidden Palms: Party Hardy
(S01E03) And we're back! Due to a little syndrome called "My TiVo decided to record the Lifetime channel instead of Hidden Palms," this week's episode review was a bit late. Hopefully you've been tiding yourself over by watching this bee-yotch filled episode a couple of times.

Cliff managed to get popped in the face a couple of times, once by Greta and once by Johnny, but man ... I really wanted to see someone bitchslap the "hee hee I'm a drunken floozy" look right off of Nikki's face. That girl is trouble with a capital Jack Daniels. Who knew she'd be throwing a rager at Johnny's house in the short period of time he took to go see Greta. Plus, wasn't it Cliff who invited all the other delinquents? Still, all things considered, the part I felt the worst about was poor Liza getting snubbed, yet again. At least she got to rub lotion on Johnny this time.
