The CSI/Two and a Half Men writer switcheroo --
loved it!

CSIThe CSI/Two and a Half Men writers switch was a very clever promotion for CBS. Fortunately, the writers saw the opportunity to change places as more than just a publicity stunt. They really took the scripting seriously and came up with inventive episodes for each program. If this were a competition to see which team would deliver the better show, who would take on the task of writing winning TV in a genre not their own and succeed beyond expectations, the comedy scribes take the gold. Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn's CSI was pure genius, and if it were up to me, CSI should submit it for an Emmy.

But first there was Two and a Half Men. In an episode called "Fish in a Drawer" (and if somebody could explain what that title means, I'd be most appreciative), the story picked up after Evelyn married Teddy. In the teleplay by CSI regular writers Evan Dunsky and Sarah Goldfinger, Charlie and Courtney check out of the reception for a little romp in his room upstairs only to find Teddy's dead bod on the bed. Talk about spoiling the mood. Teddy wasn't only a corpse, he was a corpse with his pants pulled down around his ankles and lipstick stains on his hoo-ha. The cops were called in, a detective who was a dead ringer for Marg Helgenberger -- played by redhead Jamie Rose -- had the vaguely Bondian name of Jagov, Sloane Jagov. Naturally, Charlie had to make a move on her. He couldn't keep his eyes off her cleavage.

Your Guide to the 2008 TV Upfronts

The network television upfronts, when each channel presents its programming schedule and new Fall shows to advertisers, kick off today in New York. This year's presentations look to be different than the glitzy celebrations of years past ? both because of general financial worries and because the writers' strike left the networks without as many completed pilots to share. Plus, NBC ? which would normally kick off the presentations today ? jumped the gun and announced its schedule back in April. But there are still a lot of networks and potential shows to keep an eye on this week. Here's a look at what I'll be looking for:

NBC (presented in April)
Big questions: When NBC announced its schedule early, the network's executives seemed committed to seeing it through no matter what the other networks threw at them. But once all the schedules are out, will NBC want to shuffle some of its series to different time slots?

ABC (presents Tuesday)
Big questions: Will ABC bring back the majority of its new series from last Fall, as many suspect ? and will any of them move to new time slots?

What could make the schedule: ABC is expected to go light on new shows for the Fall, saving them for midseason (though we might get to hear about some of them this week anyway). The two that sources say are nearly sure things are the adaptation of Life on Mars and a new season of Scrubs, relocated from NBC. Current buzz has Women's Murder Club being canceled and Eli Stone returning.

For the other three networks, just

TWIXT REAL WORLD AND TOOBWORLD

In Vacaville, near San Francisco, Walter Witthoef found a pit bull in the engine bay of his F-150. Somehow it got stuck inside the engine compartment with its head poking up behind the motor. To pass the time, the dog started chewing the fuel lines, distributor wires, some hoses, and whatever else was in range of its mouth.

Witthoef called Animal Services who were able to free the pit bull and reunite it with its owners the next day.

Big deal!

Over in Europe, it might not be uncommon to find old professors munching on fast food burgers under the hood and resting on the engines.

Yet another example as to why Toobworld is a world of fantasy.

Eric Stoltz and Frances Fisher join the SciFi
team

Eric Stoltz - CapricaThe wheels keep on turning for the Battlestar Galactica spin-off Caprica. Eric Stoltz is the latest addition to the cast. He'll be playing Daniel Graystone, wealthy computer engineer. Details are few and far between, of course, but so far we know that after a family tragedy he will use his knowledge of technology to forever change the future of Caprica. He's joined by Alessandra Toressani, who will play his daughter, Zoe. And if your mind just flashed to Stoltz in Killing Zoe, we're on the same page.

That news is given a bit more of a boost if you recall that Paula Malcomson has already been cast as Amanda Graystone, a surgeon described as "something of a double agent." Now, add that to the previously revealed bits that tell us the story takes place 50 years before Galactica and focuses on the creation of the Cylons. A picture starts to emerge.
