Here we are. Remember after the season premiere of Nip/Tuck how angry I was about Christian giving it to his therapist, Dr. Faith, in a painful doggy style banging. Why would an educated, successful, beautiful, professional PSYCHATRIST take it from...

South Park: Mystery of the Urinal Deuce

Filed under: OpEd, Animation, South Park, Comedy Central

south park(S10E09) Almost immediately after the events of 9/11, conspiracy theories began to crop up, and probably faster than ever before now that we had the internet and a way to instantaneously transmit gross misinformation and conclusions rife with logical fallacies. I think Cartman best summed up this episode with a line from his song about finding the truth behind 9/11: "I can't base my logic on proof."

While Mr. Macke tries to find out which boy took a crap in one of the urinals, Cartman decides to finally get to the bottom of 9/11. He presents his finding in class, and by using tortured logic, doctored photos and actually 9/11 conspiracy theories that are easily debunked by anyone with the ability to think rationally, he proves to the class that it was in fact Kyle who was behind it all along. What's especially funny about this is that Cartman hates Kyle, and obviously began his research wanting to prove Kyle's involvement. The same bass-ackward approach is exactly what causes anti-Semites to blame 9/11 on a Jewish plot, and every liberal college kid with a DSL connection and a gravity bong to blame the event on a government plot to increase public favor for invading the Middle East. When Cartman points out that one fourth of the population believe there was a conspiracy behind 9/11, Stan wisely points out that one fourth of the population is probably retarded.

It would be easy to milk comedy out of all the insane theories that continue to thrive in the face of boring, mundane facts, but Matt and Trey always manage to take it to another level, this time creating a hysterical meta episode in which 9/11 and the mystery of the urinal turd begin to intersect, and more and more people, including two mystery-solving brothers who get "raging clues" and even the President himself, become involved. The episode becomes completely convoluted by the end, but somehow in the twisted world of South Park it seems to make sense that the US government would have a vested interest in the poo Stan laid in the urinal when all the other toilets were occupied. The whole episode didn't make a lot of sense, which is precisely the point.

The Nine: Heroes Welcome

Filed under: Drama, ABC, OpEd, The Nine

The Nine(S01E02) I love how this show isn't toying with us. Sure, they're holding back on many of the details about what exactly happened during the 52 hour bank robbery, but you don't get the feeling they're taunting us or teasing us (*cough* Lost *cough*). Everything that is happening and the way they're showing it seems natural to the story, and it's amazing how intriguing a two or three second flashback snippet can be.

In this ep, the survivors are trying to get on with their lives, but it's not going to be easy...

Jeremy is trying to get back to his life as a surgeon, but keeps on having flashbacks to the robbery, including two disturbing quick shots of one of the robbers shooting someone; Nick is sick of the way the police are handling this and pressure from his boss, so he quits (side note: cool to see Michael O'Neill from The West Wing again!); Egan becomes a media celeb, appearing on an L.A. morning show and asking for people to send in money to help Franny and her nephew (another side note: yes, that was Fred Koehler from Kate & Allie as his boss!); Franny herself has problems...she quits the bank because she can't go back in there; Felicia goes to see not only a therapist but also Lucas. She still doesn't know what happened to her in that bank. She's completely blank, and her dad doesn't want to talk about it with his wife either. Lucas meets with his lawyer, and says he doesn't want things made too difficult for anyone.

But there are problems within problems. His boss doesn't want him to quit the force, and even makes not-so-subtle threats to Nick's fellow captives (Franny had drugs in her purse at the bank and the cops found Egan's gun) if Nick doesn't come back and make the police look good. Nick takes his badge back. He also has to recant the story that he and Kathryn gave the paper. Kathryn herself is getting pressure from Ed not to align herself with Nick because of his past problems (not sure why a gambling problem would be such a big scandal or not credible, but I guess we go along with it).

This episode ends with a patient dying on Jeremy's table, Nick getting his promotion and an award with Egan (who was fired from his job for standing up to his boss), and Felicia, who goes to the jail again to see Lucas but he refuses to see her. She takes out her cell phone and we see she's the one who called 911. We also see flashbacks of a vault opening and the other crook holding a gun to her dad's head.

But the very end? Jeremy injects a liquid into Randall's IV. He dies.

Whoa.

This show succeeds (so far) because it plays as both a straight up drama AND a twisty what-happened-in-there. I thought the pilot was going to be a lot to live up to (I had that sick feeling that this wouldn't be involving in the second episode), but it kept the tension level high while also moving the story along. I don't know how they'll do a second season, but even if this turns out to be a season-long miniseries (and somehow you sense the makers know this too), it will be a great one.

Lost: The Glass Ballerina

Filed under: Drama, ABC, OpEd, Lost

Yoon-jin Kim and Daniel Dae Kim in Lost.

(S03E02) Someone want to tell me why they had to call this episode "The Glass Ballerina?" It referred to one tiny thing at the very beginning! I don't know, I guess I just like my episode titles to actually tell me what's going on and not give me some vague reference to something that's ultimately not all that important. Alias used to be notorious for this. But in the end, what did we learn from the glass ballerina? We learned that Sun is a big ol' cheating liar.

Seriously though. Why not call this episode something significant like, "I Want That Boat?" Because that's pretty much all this episode was about. Ben (The Artist Formerly Known as Henry Gale) and the rest of his merry islanders found out that Sun, Jin, and Sayid were sailing around the island. So naturally Ben wants the boat and so far, Ben gets what he wants. Maybe it's just me, but is anyone else having a hard time buying Ben as the leader? Granted, there were probably about half a dozen big, husky men with shotguns and tazers waiting in case anything should happen, but why didn't Jack go all ninja on Ben's ass at the end of the ep? He could take him. I just don't find the guy all that intimidating. Whatever. I'll get back to that.

This was a Jin/Sun flashback episode (and those are generally my least favorite ones), but this one wasn't so bad. As I said, Sun is a big ol' cheater. Who was she sleeping with? We all remember Jae, the hotelier's son? Baldie? It was him. Poses an interesting question with a likely answer though. Her little fling with Jae couldn't have happened too soon before Australia, right? So it seems likely that Jae is the father of Sun's baby then.

To understand the next line I want to talk about, we have to touch on Sayid first. He rightly suspected that The Others have Jack, Kate, and Sawyer and he planned to ambush them by building a giant fire to lure them out. But he kept telling Sun and Jin that the fire and smoke was a signal for Jack. Sun figured out he was lying but she kept her mouth shut. Jin caught on too and he called Sun on it. He said something along the lines of "I know you betrayed me" and it seems two-fold. I think he knew Sun slept with Jae but he just doesn't care enough. Jae did, after all, jump off his balcony after Jin put the hurt on him in the flashback. But does Jin realize the baby likely isn't his?

Moving on... Sawyer and Kate were stuck doing manual labor for The Others. They were breaking up rocks and moving them. Seems like kind of a pointless exercise when you're on an island covered in them. Kate did have a conversation with that brunette, the rebel. She's the one who helped Claire escape last season right? Not sure why they've re-introduced her. Regardless, after that it got interesting. Sawyer said screw it and kissed Kate. She kissed back. Oooohhhh! But his motives only became clear after he talked to Kate later. He kissed her because he wanted to but also to test his captors abilities. He got his ass kicked after the smooch but now he knows what Zeke's buddies are capable of. Too bad Ben hears all of Sawyer's plans over a closed-circuit TV security feed.

Speaking of Zeke (did we learn his real name?), he was part of the group sent out to get the boat. Sun was on it and she shot one of The Others. Colleen? I think that was her name but it's the actress that plays Trixie on Deadwood. After she fired, Sun got off the boat safely... but The Others have it now. Not good.

Then there was Jack. Ben went to see him at the end of the ep. Introduced himself properly. "Hi. My name is Benjamin Linus and I've lived on this island all my life." This was the part I was talking about earlier. Why no brawling Jack?

I was disappointed with the ending though. It's now November 29, 2004 in the world of Lost and Ben proves to Jack that he has contact with the rest of the world. That makes sense though right? Penelope was able to find the island in the finale last spring. So it should work both ways. To back himself up, Ben plays footage from the '04 World Series and Jack can't believe that the Red Sox won after being down 3-0 to the Yankees in the ALCS. But he's got proof now. Ben claims he can get Jack home but only if Jack cooperates. The question is cooperate with what?

So that was it. A so-so episode. We didn't really find out too much about the island and what we did get was very stretched out to accommodate an hour. Knowing what we now know about Sun and Jin, was all that information that important? I suppose it is but as I said earlier, Sun's and Jin's flashbacks are generally lousy in my opinion. Next week deals with Locke. Now his stories I like.
