Jamie Kennedy a psych expert Yes, on Ghost
Whisperer

JkennedyIn a move as big as his executive producing Living with Fran, Jamie Kennedy has decided to return to series television. In fact, Jay Mohr's loss is Jamie's gain. Jamie Kennedy has signed on to the CBS psychic drama Ghost Whisperer. It's not a guest role or a mini-arc, he's a regular. Yes, Jamie Kennedy will be a regular and will play a dramatic role. Okay, he'll try to play it straight. Perhaps this will be the ultimate Jamie Kennedy experiment?

Jay Mohr was the college connection with whom Melinda consulted on Ghost Whisperer, but now that he's getting his own sitcom on the networks, Project Gary, GW needs a new character to provide the same kind of insight. Jamie will play Eli, a college grad student.

Arrested Development: Motherboy XXX - VIDEO

Arrested Development: Motherboy XXX
Do not adjust your web browser. You are now entering the
Retro Squad, where we are reviewing past episodes of classic TV shows.

(S02E13) Originally aired March 13th, 2005 -- There are way too many great episodes of Arrested Development. I can't think of any other sitcom that has as much replay value as this show does. Maybe Seinfeld, but c'mon - Jerry, Kramer, George, and Elaine had a lot of stinkers. I don't think the Bluths ever disappointed. When we nominated Arrested Development to get the "Retro Squad" treatment, "Motherboy XXX" immediately popped into my head. It's one of my favorites because it blends so many different stories together and it includes what I think is quite possibly the funniest, and most important, inside joke ever featured on the show.

Bravo spins off Top Chef Junior, a cooking
competition for teenagers

The continued success of Top Chef has led Bravo to order two new cooking-themed shows, including a spin-off of Top Chef called Top Chef Junior. That show--shouldn't it be Junior Top Chef or Top Junior Chef?--will be "an eight episode series where teens (likely ages 13 to 16) will compete to see if they have what it takes to become a junior 'Top Chef,'" according to a Bravo press release. In the release, Bravo EVP Frances Berwick said, "With 'Top Chef Junior' we're reaching a growing market and are developing a series that will teach and test the skills of...

Seth Green Will Play A Make-A-Wish Child On Earl

seth-green.jpgSeth Green will guest star on My Name Is Earl as a former Make-a-wish child. His character will be an ex-cancer patient whose dream was to play in an action movie...and Earl ruined it. I used to love watching MNE, but lost interest after season 1. I might actually tune in for this one...if my DVR isn't full from Denise Richards/Lohan, and every other crappy reality show that I'm obsessed with.

Ted Allen to host new show for Food Network

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, Pickups and Renewals, Casting

Ted AllenIt sounds like the Food Network has finally come up with a show that will compliment Alton Brown's Peabody-award winner Good Eats. The foodiest member of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Ted Allen, has signed to host Food Detectives, a new Food Network series. Starting Tuesday, July 29th at 9 o'clock ET, the half-hour show will begin illuminating the world about the stuff we eat. They will be "pulling back the curtain and revealing the answers to some of the most puzzling food mysteries."

Actually, the concept is kind of like a Mythbusters for food. Ted will host the show and folks from Popular Science Magazine will provide the expertise. For instance, does an apple a day keep the doctor away? What about baked beans, do they really give you gas? If not, what's Beano going to do with all those commercials and product?

Katherine Heigl to Take On Carolyn Jessop's
Polygamy Story

Carolyn Jessop's memoir Escape will be adapted for the big screen, with Katherine Heigl attached to star and produce, Variety reports. Jessop, whose testimony helped convict polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, "was born into the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints sect. At 18 she married a man 32 years her senior; at 35, she fled with her eight children."

Another memoir focusing on this same Warren Jeffs case was also recently acquired by a movie studio, Elissa Wall's Stolen Innocence. Apparently this particular case is becoming a favorite headline for filmmakers to rip.

Do you think Heigl will do well with this weighty drama?

Celebrity Circus debuts tonight

The latest show in the parade of pseudo-celebrity series comes to NBC tonight as the network debuts Celebrity Circus at 9:30 p.m. ET. As always, "celebrity" is a huge stretch, as the cast is mostly made up of reality stars and D-list celebs, with the exception of Antonio Sabato Jr., and maybe Rachel Hunter and Blu Cantrell. The cast has been training for eight weeks with a special circus troupe that was assembled for the show, led by Philippe Chartrand. They'll perform different acts--such as the wheel of death, the high wire, the flying trapeze, and Chinese poles--and compete for...

TCM presents movies for kids - The Essentials Jr.

Essentials Jr.Way back in the early 1970's, when I was a kid (I'm not that old!), I remember seeing some amazing movies on the CBS Children's Film Festival. It was on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons and I vaguely recall my mother encouraging me to watch. Kukla, Fran and Ollie introduced the movies and to this day, I can still remember seeing classic foreign films that were made for children like The Red Balloon (French), Hand in Hand (British) and Skinny and Fatty (Japanese). I think those movies may have been the first that really got be interested in film.

Turner Classic Movies seems to be providing a similar service for kids today, albeit by presenting great classics from Hollywood's golden era. TCM started a new series called Essentials Jr. Grey's Anatomy star Chris O'Donnell (Scent of a Woman) co-hosts with Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine). Together, they provide introductions and discuss the films, movies that are picked to be just right for kids. According to TCM, "The chosen films are ones that any cinema-literate child should know about and be able to enjoy with family and friends including grown-ups."

Justine Bateman tries her hand at sitcom writing

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Industry, OpEd, Celebrities, Children, Reality-Free

Justine BatemanGive Justine Bateman credit: She could have been typecast after playing the dippy, fashion-obsessed Mallory Keaton on Family Ties, but she's been able to build a nice career for herself over the last twenty years by playing interesting supporting roles in movies like The TV Set and series like Desperate Housewives. But she's also been -- just like 75% of the people in Hollywood -- an aspiring writer, struggling to get her scripts produced (and you think having connections helps ... she knows Michael J. Fox and her brother is Jason Bateman, and she still couldn't get her scripts produced).

But now she can add "sitcom writer" to her credits; she just wrote an episode of The Disney Channel's hit Wizards of Waverly Place, according to the New York Daily News. Apparently, she's a friend of executive producer Peter Murrieta, and she got to know some of the show's writers during the writers' strike. So, when the strike ended, she was invited to write an episode for the show.

For Networks, The Future Is Now

Interesting juxtaposition in TV news today - and yes, I know I can be fined and suspended for using a word like juxtaposition in a TV blog, unless I'm analyzing the symbolism in "Lost." First up was Frazier Moore's AP...
