Why Sitcoms Are the Most Anticipated New Fall TV

Earlier today, James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed published some interesting results of a tracking poll that measured viewers' "emotional attachment" to some of the upcoming new fall series.

'Hawaii Five-O' and '$#*! My Dad Says' took the top spots in the tracking poll, but that doesn't seem to be a big surprise; fans of the original 'Five-O' have been clamoring to see the Alex O'Loughlin-starring remake, and the pairing of William Shatner and a Twitter-feed-to-sitcom success story has made '$#*!' a show that people want to see, despite some bad reviews of the pilot from us grumpy critic-types.

But the shows that round out the top five are a bit of a surprise: 'Running Wilde' and 'Raising Hope' on FOX, and the new CBS sitcom 'Mike & Molly.' This is from a poll which, according to Hibberd, has an 85% track record, though he pointed out that last year's list didn't contain the popular and critically-acclaimed 'Modern Family,' while it did contain the cancelled 'FlashForward.'

The three comedies have been well-promoted by their respective networks, but they are not as high profile as the top two shows on the list. But there are a number of reasons why new comedies are springing to mind when people talk about fall debuts:

If you're watching CBS, there's a good chance you're around 55 years old.

LiveFeed is reporting a new study by Nielsen and analyst Steve Sternberg has found the median ages of CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox viewers are now higher than ever.

The average age of an ABC viewer is 51 years old, 49 for NBC and 44 for Fox. Ten years ago ABC was 43, NBC was 45, CBS was 52 and Fox was 35.The CW has stayed the same at an average of 33 years old.

Some of the oldest-skewing broadcast shows are 'Dancing With the Stars' at 57 years old and on CBS, the 'NCIS' franchise at 57 and 'The Good Wife' at 58. Fox's Sunday night animated block of programming's average viewer age is 30-32 years old. Meanwhile, 'Glee' clocks in at 38 years old.

In other TV news ...

o. 'True Blood' star Kevin Alejandro will guest star on 'Parenthood' for a multiple episode arc. Alejandro will play Mike, a possible love interest for Lauren Graham's Sarah. Mike and Sarah work together at Adam's shoe company. Zosia Mamet of 'United States of Tara' will also guest star as a friend of Amber. [Ausiello Files]

o. Eric Winters has joined CBS's 'The Mentalist' in a recurring role. Winters will play an FBI agent that is a possible love interest for Amanda Righetti's character Grace. [Deadline]

o. 'Star Wars: Clone Wars' season 3 will premiere on Sept. 17. The Cartoon Network series that chronicles the time between 'Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones' and 'Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith' is a big ratings winner for the network. Last season's premiere was seen by 2.5 million viewers. [The Wrap]

Pilot Scoop: Blue Bloods

I'm totally changing gears here with the Fall TV pilots, and switching from my assessment of Hellcats to something heavier: CBS's new drama, Blue Bloods.

What it's about: The Reagans have served the NYPD for multiple generations: grandfather Henry (Len Cariou) was the chief of police, his son Frank (Tom Selleck) is currently in the job, and Frank's children Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and Erin (Bridget Moynahan) also maintain law and order (as a detective and an assistant D.A., respectively). Now, the youngest of the household, Jamie (Will Estes), is being welcomed into the fold, having just graduated from the police academy. The family members butt heads, but ultimately try to help each other out when it comes to solving a hard-to-crack case.

Where it works: The show has the same writing team as The Sopranos, so what more do you need? I don't care much about the actual episode-to-episode police cases - that's why you have every other procedural drama on television - but the family relationships here really hit a nice chord. The pilot sets up who each Reagan is (without giving away too much), and a surprise twist with a police conspiracy should keep viewers invested beyond just the first few weeks.

Where it doesn't: A couple of the characters feel clichéd, specifically Danny, who is the hot-tempered cop that's not afraid to take drastic measures for justice. He has a sweeter, family-man side to help round him out, but I still feel like we've seen this over-the-top type before.

Am I hooked? Definitely. I enjoy seeing the family interact (not to mention, Estes is nice to look at), and the pilot sets up enough suspense that I'm already dying to see the second episode.
