The Next Iron Chef: Umami (Deliciousness) - open
thread

The Next Iron ChefThe only things I know about umami comes from those Kikkoman commecials, the ones that talk about umami being the fifth taste (after sweet, salty, sour, and bitter). Last night's Next Iron Chef was all about that, and they even had Iron Chef Morimoto as a judge.

What did you think? The show is down to its final three contestants. Can you picture one of them standing next to other Iron Chefs like Morimoto, Flay, Cora, Batali, and Symon in Kitchen Stadium?

Gwyneth Paltrow to Join Nicole Kidman in The
Danish Girl

About a year ago Nicole Kidman signed on to play a transsexual in The Danish Girl, and now Gwyneth Paltrow has signed on to play her (his?) wife. Taking over a role originally slated for Charlize Theron, Paltrow will play Greta, an artist in 1920s Copenhagen who encourages her husband (Kidman) to pose as a female model - but has mixed feelings about the matter when her husband decides to undergo a sex change operation.

This is the second recent project that Charlize has dropped out of only to make room for another big star (the first is The Tourist), but do you think Gwyneth will be a better fit for the role?

The Locator crew's van stolen at Seattle airport

A rental van being used by the crew of WEtv's The Locator was stolen by a man with a warrant fleeing from authorities. That happened last Tuesday as the crew was loading it with gear; the van was eventually recovered. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has the story, which is pretty amusing, especially since crew members were talking to the thief via walkie-talkies that were in the van.... keep reading »

Fact or Fiction: Big Bang, Brothers & Sisters and
CSI

big_bang_theory_cast
Welcome to our new feature, TV Squad readers. How well do you know what you think you know about television? Play our little trivia game, Fact or Fiction. We'll state the premise, then tell you the reality, i.e. the fact or the fiction. By the way, if you have ideas for Fact or Fiction, or questions you'd like us to figure out, share with us in the comments.

Fact or Fiction: When Chuck Lorre originally created The Big Bang Theory, the boys were dominated by a nasty neighbor named Katie.

Fact! Chuck Lorre told Watch magazine's Jim Colluci that a year before The Big Bang Theory was picked up by CBS, the first pilot had a female character named Katie. She manipulated the guys. "It was like shooting fish in a barrel. It didn't work," Johnny Galecki told Colluci. The problem was that Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard were and are essentially innocents and without maliciousness. The idea of a woman taking advantage of their innocence was not only mean, it wasn't funny. The writers went back to the drawing board -- so to speak -- and, thus, the character of sweet, gentle Penny was born.

The Good Wife - Conjugal, S01E06

The Good Wife continues to be terrific television, as we not only examine the inner workings of a law firm and courtroom, but also the personal tragedies involved with wrongful convictions.
Alicia (Julianna Marguelies) and Cary (Matt Czuchry) worked together for once, trying to successfully get in a last minute appeal. Though they submitted the appeal on time, it was rejected. Still, both having been approached by the wife of the convicted man, Alicia and Cary convinced the firm to try an appeal based on the fact that the man was entirely innocent, and not just that the case had not been tried fairly.
The most interesting part of the episode was the demonstration of how difficult it is to be an eye witness and to actually recognize someone in a line up. We watched brief videos, and then had to identify who we'd seen from 6 photos. I did not succeed on any, and neither did the characters, even though we had just seen the video and most line ups take place days or even weeks after the initial event. What do we actually see or notice when we see a person once, for only a moment. A t-shirt or a hat is easier to place, rather than the person wearing them.
To win the case, Alicia again went to her husband, Peter (Chris Noth), and got advice that eventually won them the case and freed an innocent man from jail. Margulies and Noth have such amazing chemistry, you can't help but want to see them together, but is Peter actually innocent? And even if he is, can they get over the even bigger issue of his affairs?
The draw to this show is two-fold - the interesting court cases and Alicia's personal life. So far, both have maintained an average of excellence that exceeds expectation.Do you agree?

Californication- So Heres The Thing

Well I guess they can’t all be winners.  Sometimes it is necessary to move the story along at the expense of making a really great episode.  This episode of Californication wasn’t bad by any means, but it really did kind of just serve to further the plot. With Karen back in his life Hank Moody needs [...]

Review: The Venture Bros. - Return to Malice

21 podcasting
(S04E04)
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious, in a town called Malice. Yeah. I totally just made that up. Right now. Free words of wisdom, from me to you.

This episode wasn't spectacular for the purposes of laughing-out-loud. It was funny in a few moments, yes, but I spent most of the twenty-some minutes resting my chin on my fist, brow furrowed with concern. All the characters are going through some heavy stuff right now, and that inner turmoil, dealing with loss and identity and love, came bubbling to the surface in this episode. Doing so, again, isn't much of a gut-buster, but it makes for beautiful character development. Can you tell I have faith in this show? Maybe a little too much.
