So, the dreaded Needle in a Haystack Roadblock appeared this week, called an Amazing Race Switchback. It was just an excuse to mentally and physically torture the teams, really. Teams traveled from Amsterdam to Sweden (with a funny aside from the Globetrotters about wanting to visit the Red Light District). This leg was pretty easy, [...]

It's fun to see a show that's boxed in by a formula do something a little outside that box. Such was the case with this week's Cold Case. The formula was still there (complete with the "who's the least likely suspect" game), but the story was just a smidge outside of the usual for this show. And it was enough to make me sit up and pay attention. Although about halfway through it, I found myself wishing we were working on Jeffries' case. And that's not a knock on the episode, but a compliment to the intrigue the show created surrounding the missing girl he never found. I have a feeling that case will make a re-appearance soon (fingers crossed). Anyway, I enjoyed this horse racing tale and found the move outside of CC's comfort zone to be fun. And of course, there was also that funny conversation about whips and crops between Lil and Scotty.
Like many of you, I like to watch the Triple Crown. I'm not one for the pomp and circumstance surrounding it or the gambling on it, but I do enjoy the shear athletic power that these Thoroughbreds possess. You can see their drive to win in their eyes, so like Sonny, my heart broke for ---- and then it downright crumbled when we learned about the insurance fraud! How much did I hate that owner and want him to be the killer?? At least he's sitting in jail for insurance fraud. And, this wasn't the only horse he did it to!! Sick.
Speaking of sick, Jose needed some serious help for that raging gambling addiction he was nursing. There's being upset when your horse loses, and then there's being so upset when your horse loses that you take a metal rake to the back of the jockey's head. Apparently, it doesn't even matter if aforementioned jockey is your father!!! Just wow. This was a weird resolution for me. It's not that the show didn't provide plenty of evidence to show how emotionally messed up Jose was, and therefore, a believable killer, but at the same time, I had a bit of a hard time accepting the son killing his father as violently as he did. Then again, addiction is a powerful force. LOVED the mystery surrounding the will and the final reveal. Also LOVED that hilarious whip/crop scene between Lilly and Scotty. Who knew Lil was such a horse racing enthusiast?
Overall, another "good" outing. CC moves to 6-0 on the season. Screencap courtesy of RichE at Kathryn Morris UK.

Paul Mooney is well known to stand-up comedians for his own work and for writing for his longtime friend, Richard Pryor. Outside of that, though, his name recognition gets a little fuzzier. So for TV comedy fans, Mooney's new memoir, Black Is the New White, provides some great behind-the-scenes moments they should probably know.
There are a lot of heartfelt stories about Richard Pryor and Mooney's own personal life, but there is a lot of fun TV trivia, as well. Mooney talks about getting forced onstage by a couple of friends to do his first solo stand-up spot in the early 60s in San Francisco. Mooney is drunk and nervous, and winds up doing the act of a comic named Ronnie Schell, who would later co-star with Jim Nabors on Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Mooney admits whenever he catches the show in reruns, he feels a little guilty.
Readers also get to see Mooney and Pryor trying to write for Sanford and Son, a gig that only lasted a couple of episodes. Predictably, they were a bit too explosive for network TV. Mooney talks about Pryor's meltdown on The Richard Pryor Show (which featured future stars like Robin Williams, Sandra Bernhard, and John Witherspoon), territory that has been covered before, but not from the perspective of a friend like Mooney. And Mooney devotes a bit of time to In Living Color, which adopted his concept for Homey the Clown and the catch phrase, "Homey don't play that." Earlier in his career, Mooney was also a dancer on a show called Dance Party, a sort of west coast version of American Bandstand. It would be interesting to see those old tapes.
