Traveler -- An early look - VIDEO

Filed under: OpEd, Early Looks, Episode Reviews

travelerTraveler was originally on ABC's fall schedule, but it kept getting bumped back. Now it's the end of the regular network television season, and Traveler is finally getting a chance to air. Why is this? After seeing the pilot, I suspect it is because ABC was worried that the show would get lost in a sea of new dramatic serials that premiered last fall. It seems like a reasonable assumption, because there really isn't anything wrong with this series. I'm not jumping for joy over it, but I do find it somewhat intriguing.

The premise of Traveler is this: Three best friends (Jay, Tyler, and Will Traveler) graduate from Yale and plan to go on a two-month, cross-country road trip. Only, it all comes to an end on the first afternoon when there's a terrorist bombing in a NYC museum that they're in. Jay and Tyler get out, but Will is gone. And so is his stuff from the hotel. Jay and Tyler end up becoming suspects in the bombing (trust me, it makes sense), and, instead of turning themselves in, they decide to go "underground" and try to find out who this Will Traveler person really is.

Tori Amos to Try Musical Theater

Tori Amos is feeling a bit theatrical these days. On her new album, American Doll Posse, she assumes five different personas, each with a distinct look and personality. Now, according to NME, the singer is writing a stage musical, which she hopes to bring to Broadway and London's West End.

According to the NME story, Amos is currently working on the music ? a double album with 23 songs ? and taking inspiration from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice:

"I think I am writing a musical. I'm gushing but I'm under lock and key," she explained. "I'm trying to be Lloyd Webber and (Tim) Rice. I'm trying to be both (of them). I'm busy. This is such a big project - a double record, 23 songs and the extras."

Though I often roll my eyes when I hear about rock musicians who have Broadway aspirations, I actually think Tori could pull this off quite well. Her piano-heavy, melodramatic style lends itself to musical theater, and she has always been good at crafting songs that tell stories. I'll be interested to hear what she comes up with. What do you think?

Also, If you're a Tori fan, don't forget to enter our Tori Amos giveaway for a signed copy and her Epic Records catalog.

Kirk-In-A-Box

Last night was the penultimate episode of Gilmore Girls. Disappointingly, the episode really didn't hold my interest. Maybe because it was all about Rory. Although I must say, she truly impressed me by turning down Logan's proposal. Even though she feels a bit adrift, she was mature enough not to jump off the cliff. I like it. As for Luke and Lorelai, SIGH. GET OVER IT. If these two actually just, I don't know, SAT DOWN AND TALKED, everybody wouldn't be just tiptoeing around. Just let Miss Patty and Babette handle things.

Paris touched my heart last night when she threw her arms around Rory and said, "You are going to do great things in your life!" I'm sad that it's probably the last we'll see of her. Emily and Richard were also adorable, with their song. They're so goofy.

And the CW can kiss my fat ass for the finale previews. Looks like they pretty much gave away the entire episode. Here's hoping I'll be surprised...

CNET joins NBC and News Corp's new online video
venture

cnetYou've all heard about the upcoming video-sharing site from NBC and News Corp. Well, now CNET has joined the venture and will be providing content for the new site. CNET, which also owns GameSpot.com and TV.com, will provide "thousands of clips" to the new service and also serve as a distributor. NBC and News Corp already have distribution deals with Yahoo, MySpace, MSN, Comcast and AOL (which owns TV Squad).

The site launches this summer with full TV episodes and more from close to twenty television networks and two movie studios.

I'm always in favor of more ways to view television programs, so I'm anxious to see how this new site turns out. I just hope they allow user comments like YouTube does, because if I can't read a comment from CyberMonkey56 in Sheboygan telling me "thjs showes is sucks!" it's just not worth my time.

Bee Gees songs challenge American Idol's final
four

"I think you and Blake are vulnerable tonight," Simon Cowell told LaKisha Jones last night. All final four American Idol 6 contestants had a rough night performing Bee Gees songs, which gave far too many journalists license to be witty and reference "Stayin' Alive" in their Idol stories. Blake, who's...

Law & Order SVU: Annihilated

Filed under: OpEd, Law and Order, Episode Reviews

christopher meloni; elliot stabler(S08E20) Usually I would say that if Elliot Stabler gets naked, it's gonna be a great episode. I wouldn't call it "great", but it was "good". It's surprising, really, because the topic was incredibly emotional. A man killed his wife and children because his lies were getting out of hand. It's a believable premise because we've seen it played out too many times in the news media (even though L&O didn't promote this one as "ripped from the headlines").

The episode was Elliot-centric, which usually means his family is somehow involved. It was. He saw a man who was bored with his life in Staten Island, so he started making up a new life for himself complete with a fiance who thought he was a CIA agent. Of course, it imploded and, as Dr. Wong said, family killers are so narcissistic that they can't live with the shame of being caught in their lies.
