Buffy's Sarah Michelle Gellar heading back to TV

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, Celebrities, Casting, Reality-Free

sarah michelle gellar maladysBuffy the Vampire Slayer alum Sarah Michelle Gellar is starring in an HBO comedy pilot called The Wonderful Maladys, about a group of dysfunctional New York siblings. The project also stars Nate Corddry (Rob's little brother) and Swingtown vet Molly Parker.

We don't know much about the show's concept yet, but I'm looking forward to it. Being a Buffy fan, anything Sarah Michelle Gellar does instantly pops on my radar. So far, Gellar's post-Buffy career has delivered a few tedious big screen horror thrillers like The Grudge and The Return, but I loved her comic performance in Richard Kelly's Southland Tales. That performance, along with some of her funnier bits from Buffy, have me convinced that Gellar would make a great comedic lead.

Charles Randolph (The Interpreter) wrote the pilot script and TV vet Alan Taylor (Mad Men, Big Love) is directing. Gellar is executive producing the project, which will be shot early next year.

Talk Back: BBC America's "Ashes to Ashes" Series
Premiere

"The shrieking of nothing is killing..."By now, you've read my original review for Ashes to Ashes, written in February 2008 when the series first launched in the UK, and my recent second take on the darkly seductive series, after watching the whole first season. But, now that Ashes to Ashes has aired Stateside, I am curious to know what you thought of the first episode of the sequel to Life on Mars. Are you head over heels in love with Keeley Hawes' steely-nerved Alex Drake? Are you alternately terrified and intrigued by the Pierrot clown? How awesome is Gene Hunt in the 1980s? And what's your theory on what's happened to Alex... and how does it connect to the fate of poor Sam Tyler?(And before you ask: the song playing at the very end of the episode? It's Roxy Music's "Same Old Scene.")Talk back here.Next week on Ashes to Ashes, Gene Hunt is determined to keep a protest about the Docklands redevelopment under control as the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana...

Would You Want to See a Zoolander Sequel
(Twolander)

The screenwriter of Zoolander recently hinted that there might be a sequel to the movie on the horizon - and the title might be Twolander. Here's more:

"Ben [Stiller] and I have talked about it for a little while," revealed the film?s scribe, John Hamburg, about a film that would reunite Stiller's Zoolander with his nemesis-turned-comrade Hansel (Owen Wilson). "I think someday we will make that movie."

Do you think a Zoolander sequel would be fun, maybe to see these male models deal with getting older? Or would a sequel just be pointless?

GSN needs more Let's Make A Deal, less
Millionaire

Filed under: OpEd, Game Show, Reality-Free

GSNI love GSN, but there are several things wrong with it.

I don't know about you, but I've had it up to here (hand planted right around nose height) with Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The network airs the show way, way too much. I'm sure it's popular and there are probably promotional considerations involved, considering it's actually a show that's still on the air (GSN airs both the older Regis Philbin episodes and the newer Meredith Vieira ones), but we really don't need the show on as much as it is.

What would I put on instead? More classic game shows!

TV Review: Lark Rise to Candleford, BBC One,
Sunday 8 March, 8pm

What's this? Rain in Candleford? RAIN?? It seems the idyll of Lark Rise too does occasionally suffer from the weather. It's not all lazily humming bees and the air is, rarely, devoid of dreamily floating dandelion seeds. On this occasion though, it's merely a plot device. It enables Laura and her father to take refuge in the barn, and thereby catch Nan apparently in the middle of an assignation with the farmer's son. This poor lad is another of those Lark Rise characters who goes through life without an actual name, but at least he gets to

What's Cooking (9 March 2009)

Heston Blumenthal continues his "adventure with food" in medieval style this week, but it's not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach. An awful lot of what he creates barely justifies the use of the word "food" as far as I'm concerned. This week he'll be serving up for the delectation and/or desecration of his celebrity guests a pie containing 24 live pigeons, fruit made from meat and one of those fish that looks like something from the mind of Terry Gilliam, served in blood and accompanied by

Breaking Bad: Seven Thirty-Seven (season
premiere)

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Episode Reviews

Breaking Bad Cast
(S02E01)
Three hundred and sixty-four days after the first season finale, the second season of Breaking Bad finally began last night (Damn you, writers strike!). While we only got seven episodes last year, the show still made a huge impact on the television landscape, primarily by being just amazingly produced and acted. The action and tone pick up here as if we've never been away, and despite a year since new episodes, it feels like only last week that we first saw Tuco go ballistic and viciously beat his own man.

Of course, if it had been last week then I doubt we'd have rewound the scene and replayed it in its entirety. Still, it was a nice reminder of just how crazy and unpredictable Tuco is. And it was the problem of Tuco that pretty much drove the entirety of the main plot tonight. It says something as to how perfectly disturbed Raymond Cruz portrays Tuco that despite being in the episode only during two sequences, his presence hovered over every moment.

My Name Is Earl - Faking It

Chaz Dalton's Space Academy: Earl's lesson of the episode is that sometimes faking your identity can be a good thing. I'm sure victims of identity theft would not agree, but then, they've never met the real Chaz Dalton. Or Joy.
