'Past Life' - 'Pilot' Recap (series premiere)

Past Life
(S01E01) 'Past Life' is not a bad show, but I don't know if it will stand out enough to make it past the first few episodes. But who knows, it might strike a chord with viewers and find a spot on the DVR schedules. It's a little bit 'House,' a little bit 'Medium,' and a little bit 'Fringe.'

The story follows Dr. Kate McGinn (Kelli Giddish), a psychologist specializing in past life regression -- memories of past lives or incarnations. In the pilot episode, a teenager named Noah has flashes where he remembers something that never happened to him. He sees visions of a kidnapping and murder, and we eventually learn that he's actually remembering something from someone else's life.

ABC ON CBS: "ALT-BARNEY CONUNDRUM"

It looks like the Super Bowl advertising gave us more than just a bunch of new TV characters (personal favorite? The robot in the Pentium blipvert.) A CBS promo for 'How I Met Your Mother' showed Barney flashing a sign advertising his Lothario ways differed from the one seen on the HIMYM episode that aired the following night:
The easy splainin? Even though Super Bowl 44 (screw the Roman numerals!) was televised, we were still seeing the actual Super Bowl game. The gang back at Ted's apartment watched the televersion of that same game. And so the difference between the commercial and the telecast within the show have to be considered from alternate dimensions.

The CBS promo has to be the one Super Bowl blipvert that has to be relegated to an alternate dimension. The rest of them can find a home in Earth Prime-Time, the main Toobworld.

The CBS promo could probably fit right into the "promoverse" where many of the USA Network blipverts combining their shows ended up....

'Bones' Creator Hart Hanson Brought Onto New Fox
Pilot

Hart Hanson of Bones and Pleading GuiltyAccording to the Hollywood Reporter, 'Bones' creator Hart Hanson is now attached to the pilot for 'Pleading Guilty,' a drama on Fox that already has an impressive roster of names. Hanson will serve as an executive producer on the show, which is based on the Scott Turow novel of the same name.

Turow's books have been adapted before -- the big screen adaptation of 'Presumed Innocent' starred Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy, 'Reversible Errors' was adapted for TV with William H. Macy and Tom Selleck, as was 'The Burden of Proof' with Hector Elizondo and Brian Dennehy.

Eric Braeden Marks 30 Years on 'The Young and the
Restless'

Eric_Braeden_Peter_Bergman_The_Young_and_the_restlessWell, as Victor Newman might say: "That's a hell of a thing." Eric Braeden celebrated his 30th anniversary on 'The Young and the Restless.' It's not just three decades that makes it a memorable mark, it's that it has come after a very rough year in which Braeden quit the soap in a contract dispute and was brought back into the fold in part thanks to the influence of the head of the network, Les Moonves.

In honor of Braeden's tenure on the soap, there was a big party to commemorate the anniversary. As this picture reveals, Peter Bergman was in attendance and posed with Eric. True, on screen as Jack Abbott and Victor Newman, the two men would like to rip each other to bits, but off screen they're very civil and appreciative of each other's talents. They have had occasional dust-ups, but generally, they get along well.

After all, their characters' on screen feud has been the stuff of soap legend. Victor and Jack have shared wives, corporations, but mostly, unabashed hatred. They despise each other.

TELE-FOLKS DIRECTORY: MINA HARKER

For Toobworld, the official version of Dracula was portrayed by Rudolf Martin, first as a human warlord of Romania in a TV movie about Vlad "The Impaler" Tepesz and then as the vampiric count in an episode of 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer'. One good thing to come out of the short-lived series 'Demons' was the declaration that the story by Bram Stoker was a work of fiction about the vampire. But even so, Stoker stole many elements from the "historical events" of Dracula's "life" during the last years of the19th Century. And these would include the "real" people Jonathan Harker and his fiance Mina Murray. Stoker used their real names, but fictionalized some of the details in their lives. So if any adaptation of "Dracula" is even somewhat faithful to the book, we can dispatch it to some alternate TV dimension. And the version of Dracula from 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' and the version of Mina Harker from 'The Buff Vampire Slayer' - er, I mean, from 'Demons', can be considered the official portayals of those characters in Toobworld because they differ greatly from the novel. Does that make any sense? It does to me, but then I'm not right in the head. Looking through the IMDb, it looks like Mina didn't make it into as many adaptations of "Dracula" as would be expected. So it's not like we'd be tossing out a better candidate for the role in Toobworld in favor of Zoe Tapper in 'Demons'. And with her multiple outings in the role, even limited at six with the end of the first and only season, she would have had the upper hand anyway.Other portrayals of Mina Harker on TV include:

June Crowley
. . . Dracula: A Chamber Musical (2000)
Suzanne Neve
. . . "Mystery and Imagination" (1966) {Dracula (#4.3)}

Stephanie Leonidas. . . Dracula (2006)
Jo-Anne Knowles
. . . "Young Dracula" (2006)
Judi Bowker (Wilhelmina 'Mina' Westenra - a different last name for once)
. . . Count Dracula (1977)

Life in the Present Tense: Family Plots on
"Damages"

This week's episode of Damages featured a first for the serpentine legal thriller: no flash-forwards. Instead, the plot unfolded in a linear fashion and was confined to the present-day, focusing on both the machinations of the Tobin family, Tom confessing to his in-laws about the financial fraud, and the domestic squabbles at the Parsons' home in New Jersey. There were no flashbacks, no six months later flash-forwards, and I missed the nonlinear structure of the series. Yes, the writers tried something different but what works best about Damages is that it is the television narrative equivalent of a Rubik's cube; I love twisting the various elements together, twirling the plot threads, to resemble something complete and whole.Last night's episode ("Flight's at 11:08") therefore placed its emphasis on Patty relentlessly pursuing the Tobin case and engaging in some mindgames with the Tobin family lawyer Leonard Winstone, while Ellen chose her family over the legal adventures promised by Patty Hewes, settling in for an evening of tension, petty feuds, and crystal meth at her parents' house. In other words: the domestic and the professional collided once more as several of the characters were forced to weigh their careers against their personal lives. I don't think anyone was more surprised by what they ended up choosing than Ellen herself. Ellen. Did Ellen make the right choice? She had made a commitment to her family, after all, and Season One was overflowing with...
