As the first season of Fox?s breakout comedy New Girl comes to a close, creator Liz Meriwether talks to me about the blowback over star Zooey Deschanel and her character Jess?s ?adorkable? qualities, the show's handling of sexuality, and girl-on-girl snark.Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "The Woman Behind New Girl," in which I sit down with New Girl creator Liz Meriwether to discuss the show's first season as a whole, reactions to Jess and her "adorkable" qualities, the show's handling of sexuality, girl-on-girl snark (particularly surrounding New Girl and Girls), and more. One of the few comedy hits of the season, Fox?s New Girl, wraps its first season Tuesday night. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether (No Strings Attached), New Girl revolves around a socially awkward teacher, Jess (Zooey Deschanel), who?after discovering her boyfriend has cheated on her?moves in with three guys (Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris, and Jake Johnson) and discovers that they are just as neurotic as she is.At 30, Meriwether might be one of the youngest television show creators in Hollywood. Arriving fresh from a dental cleaning, she was sporting similar eyeglasses to the ones Zooey Deschanel?s Jess dons on the show. Meriwether?s been known to spend the night at the office and says coffee is her fuel. ?Honestly, other people?s brilliance and creativity gets me through the day and pushes me to keep thinking about the show,? she said, sitting in her office on the...

Add to myYahoo!Nearly 50 years ago, Gothic soap Dark Shadows hooked audiences with its spooky storylines and before-its-time remorseful vampire. Ahead of Tim Burton?s movie adaptation, a new DVD version of the show--a limited edition $600 complete series containing all 1220+ episodes packaged in a coffin--comes out Tuesday.Over at The Daily Beast, you can read "The Enduring Thrills of Dark Shadows," in which I reflect upon the enduring legacy of afternoon soap opera Dark Shadows and its influence upon popular culture today. I grew up watching both the 1991 revival series (which aired during primetime on NBC during the Gulf War) and the original, watching whatever scraps I could get my hands on from VHS tapes at Blockbuster and syndicated runs of the show. It remains a magical experience unlike anything on television to this day.In Tim Burton?s Dark Shadows, due in theaters Friday, Johnny Depp puts on the fangs of immortal vampire Barnabas Collins, awakened from his centuries-old slumber into a time he cannot comprehend, surrounded by a wealthy and eccentric family he does not know, and thirsting for both blood and his doomed true love, Josette du Pres.Dark Shadows, of course, is based on Dan Curtis?s groundbreaking cult classic, the 1966?71 ABC daytime soap that became mandatory viewing for many households, including a generation of viewers rushing home from school to catch its latest supernatural plotline. The show spun off feature films (1970?s House of Dark Shadows and...

Add to myYahoo!I am a pretty big fan of food and an even bigger fan of people who enjoy a good meal. I can't tell you how annoyed I get when out to dinner with someone who just doesn't eat (And I'm not talking about people dealing with debilitating eating disorders or other illnesses, because that is something different entirely.) We all have that one friend that order an appetizer size portion or a side salad at every meal and then picks at it the entire time. Heaven forbid you suggest the dessert menu for the loo of horror they give you. That just doesn't fly with me. I agree with "all things in moderation" and don't condone eating a huge entrée and dessert at every meal (because that's just unhealthy) but I simply can't stomach someone who is so ? uninterested in food. I do have a few friends who fit the bill of the ideal dinner companion but there are also plenty of fictional characters that I would love to grab some grub with.

Add to myYahoo! As of February 2012, Obama's popularity poll ratings with America's youth were 28% lower than they were heading into the 2008 election.
Since he's going to have to do some work in the coming months if he wants to win those voters back, the president spoke to students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond this past Saturday to spearhead the effort.
"The Daily Show" sent correspondent Al Madrigal out into the field to get a sense of kids' reactions to his speech, but unfortunately, the rally happened to fall on Cinco de Mayo.
So Madrigal braved the bars, microphone in hand, in an attempt to gauge how effective Obama's talk had been. The students seemed to have other things on their minds for the most part.

Add to myYahoo! This must be a dream. Alan?s returned from hospital to find a ?Welcome Home? greeting from his friends and family at the Beach House. Surely, we?re looking at a Two and A Half Men apocalypse.

Add to myYahoo! We love when celebrities take a stand against Hollywood's beauty ideals.
Earlier this week, 90210 star AnnaLynne McCord tweeted a picture of herself baring it all -- acne that is. "I woke up this morning and decided I'm over Hollywood's perfection requirement. To all my girls (and boys) who have ever been embarrassed by their skin! I salute you! I'm not perfect -- and that's okay with me," she said.
The 24-year-old's picture brought in over 118,039 views and positive tweets from fans all over the Twitterverse including, "There are so many ideals of what women should be and how they should look! Thank You for representing that it's OK to be yourself!" and "Thank you so much for this picture. You have no idea what it means to teenagers!"
At times, Hollywood often pressures women to be too thin, but we salute McCord's brave attempt to raise confidence and self-esteem levels among young women everywhere.
What do you think of McCord's fresh-faced look? Is she making a difference? Let us know in the comments below.

Add to myYahoo!'90210' actress AnnaLynne McCord has tweeted yet another nude photo. While she's still topless, this one is less racy, but arguably very brave
The 24-year-old beauty tweeted a photo of herself without a stitch of makeup. On May 4, McCord posted the photo along with an explanation on her Twitter page:
"I woke up this morning and decided I'm over Hollywood's perfection requirement. To all my girls(and boys) who have."
McCord joins other celebs, such as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Demi Lovato, Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian and Snooki, who have all shared a snapshot of themselves completely au naturel.
We have to admit McCord still looks beautiful, but quite different without makeup. It also reminds us that celebrities really are just like us, uneven skin and all.

Add to myYahoo! The beautiful Leighton Meester may have been spot-on when it came to her tiered tulle gown at last night's Met Gala in New York, but she missed the mark when she hopped on the Oompa Loompa tan train.
Although we applaud Meester for hitting the spray-tan booth rather than a dangerous tanning bed, she may want to dial it back next time she steps out under the bright lights on the red carpet.
But Meester's not alone in her tanning faux pas. Stars like Ashley Tisdale, Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton have all been the victim of an over-the-top orange glow.
Check out Leighton's Met Gala look and her fellow terribly tawny celebrities below:
