Researchers say stem cells could be engineered to
fight HIV

Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, havediscovered that human stem cells could be engineered to killHIV-infected cells.

A study published yesterday in the peer reviewed online journal PLoSONE details a demonstration of the process, which is essentially agenetic medicine.

It is thought that the findings could potentially could be used against a range of chronic viral diseases.

The process involved taking CD8 cytotoxic T lymphocytes, known as"killer" T cells that help fight infection, from an HIV-positive person.

Researchers were able to identify the molecule present in the Tcells which allow them to fight cells infected with HIV. T cells existin the human body but not in large enough quantities to kill the viruscompletely.

The molecule was then cloned and placed in genetically-engineeredstem cells, which were put into the bodies of mice. It was found thatthe cells developed into mature, HIV-specific CD8 cells which were ableto target cells infected with the HIV virus.

Researchers found that human patients undergoing the treatment wouldhave to matched to the HIV-specific T cell receptors in the same way asorgan transplants.

Lead investigator Scott G Kitchen, assistant professor of medicineat the university, said: "These studies lay the foundation for furthertherapeutic development that involves restoring damaged or defectiveimmune responses toward a variety of viruses that cause chronicdisease, or even different types of tumours."

Researchers say the next step is to find out whether the processwould work in a human patient and find out what other viruses it couldbe used for.

The Health Protection Agency estimates that more than 80,000 peopleare now living with HIV in the UK, although around a third of these arethought to be undiagnosed.

High risk groups in the UK include gay and bisexual men and black Africans.

Worldwide, the number of people with HIV is thought to be 33 million.

Desperate Housewives - Out With A Bang

Boom Crunch: ...Or a crash. As in a plane crash. It's a boring episode and very little happens until the end, when a plane crashes into the Wisteria Christmas party, seemingly killing at least two residents of the Lane.

Conan O'Brien, aka the new Oprah, orders his
masses to buy Troll 2

Conan O'Brien has been trying to worm his way into Oprah's audience of unimaginative simpletons who lack the ability to form their own opinions, taste and style by offering his own recommendations for books, movies and music.

This week, he recommended the classic Troll 2, an extremely B-minus movie about a family attacked by a group of vegetarian trolls who turn people into plants for sustenance. Conan's people may or may not already know this, but Troll 2 already has an insane following of people. The film's star, Michael Paul Stephenson, made an acclaimed documentary on the film's history and popularity called Best Worst Movie and the film's director Claudio Degrasso is reportedly prepping a sequel called (I swear I'm not making this up) Troll 2: Part 2.

A twisted preview of the Kids in the Hall's
twisted new miniseries

The Kids in the Hall's official page at FunnyorDie.com has a preview of their mystery murder mini-series called Death Comes to Town.

The trailer is very promising that we'll get some good ol' fashioned classic KITH, the way Mom used to make it. So far, it's only scheduled for air in Canada next month and even though I'm a big KITH fan, I'm not willing to endure a minute of Canadian winter to watch it. So they better get their collective asses to the U.S. in a hurry.

What to Download: New Music Today

I've already gone over today's DVD releases; now here are a few music picks to help breathe life into your iPod. (If you want to weigh in on a new album, head over to the Music Review Group and write your two cents. I may even feature your thoughts on the site!)

A head-scratcher: Timbaland's collaborations seem even more forced in this follow-up to Shock Value, featuring pairings with Chad Kroeger, The Fray, even Miley Cyrus. Why does it feel like he's trying so hard? I was happy to see him return to old partner Justin Timberlake for "Carry Out," but the song is a ridiculous (albeit silly-fun) take on sex and fast food that makes me think of Timberlake's "I'm Lovin' It" McDonald's campaign. I prefer "Say Something" with Drake and "Ease Off the Liquor" - the only track where Tim is all by himself.

Never really takes off: I already shared my excitement about 30 Seconds to Mars's This Is War after previewing "Hurricane" with Kanye West, so imagine my disappointment when I heard the album in its entirety and the rapper's voice is missing (reportedly due to legal issues). Without West, War loses some of its oomph and many of the songs feel repetitive. Jared Leto's voice sounds great, but unfortunately, the music and lyrics don't pack the punch necessary for an album with This Is War as its title. Not that the boys don't have tracks worth checking out; "Alibi" showcases Leto's pipes, wailing with emo-ness.

See one more release when you read more.

A sugary second helping: You know I'm a fan of the first Glee soundtrack, so I was very excited for Volume 2. A few of the lesser-used players shine this time, including Tina on "True Colors" and Mercedes on "Proud Mary" and "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." It also gives us an early listen of "My Life Would Suck Without You," which the gleeks take on in this week's episode. But the big reason I can get behind this edition? Unlike Volume 1, which was overplayed before it even came out (hello, "Don't Stop Believin'"), we haven't heard these songs 100 times already.

Jersey Shore generates death threats to MTV,
dropped sponsors, but low ratings

MTV's two-hour debut of its docudrama Jersey Shore has generated a lot of press and even death threats to MTV employees, but it did not get a lot of viewers despite pre-season attention and controversy. The debut had 1.4 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd, who says he's "surprised" more viewers didn't tune in, and compares that to recent season debuts of The Hills (2.1 million) and The City (2 million). But... keep reading »
