You know when you want to watch a new movie on Netflix, and you wait (and wait) for it to arrive? Being an in-demand film is one thing, but now the company has struck a deal with Warner Bros that means an even longer period before that red envelope arrives. The two groups have arranged a 28-day lag time between the studio's releases and when they'll be made available to Netflix customers. That means when future hot movies like Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hit DVD, you'll have to be patient.
This news makes me groan, and I'm concerned that other big-name studios will follow suit. Ultimately, if consumers really want to see a Warner Bros film right away, they'll just go somewhere else (or even buy a copy), so I'm curious to see how it affects Netflix as a company.
What do you make of this news? Will you quit Netflix if you have to deal with set release periods?

The industry web site FTVLive.com reported earlier today that NBC was canceling The Jay Leno Show. I'm not a member of that site so I can't read the article, but it looks like it doesn't matter anyway. NBC now says that the story is false and that Leno is staying exactly where he is.
Well, that's sort of what they're saying. NBC says that Leno is "performing exactly as anticipated."* The network also says that "both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with [the affiliates] to improve the performance." Though I think most of the affiliates are probably saying "please get rid of the show."
* Really?

This Sunday night, Chuck returns to NBC for a special two-episode, two hour jump start into season three. Expect to be dazzled. NBC was good enough to send an impressive press kit for Chuck's new season, including five episodes.
For those of you who were concerned about how the show would handle the many changes promulgated by the end of last season, you can relax. While it's no spoiler to reveal that Chuck now has the fully integrated Intersect 2.0 inside his head, complete with martial arts skills and other talents (Flamenco guitar?) it's also not a surprise that having all that in his brain doesn't mean that life is any easier for a simple, Burbank IT guy.

(S01E12) It's a good thing The Middle had another episode air tonight, as something went wrong in the writing room when they tried to figure out how to work guest star Brooke Shields into the Hecks' life. Not only was it an abrupt intrusion of what we'd come to understand about the family and their neighborhood, it was a departure from the sense of realism the show had won me over with.
Slightly over the top for comedic effect is one thing, but things were taken to the point of absurdism by the time we were done learning about neighbor Rita Glossner (Shields) and her four hellacious children. It's as if the writers came up with an intriguing concept of what to do with Shields, and then weren't really sure how to write for it.

The Wall Street Journal has released a list of the Best and Worst jobs for 2010 or MMX as we like to call it. Topping the list is the odd profession of actuary, a word we had to look up: Actuaries are professionals who analyze the financial impact of risk,particularly looking ahead far into the future. Actuaries use skills inmathematics, economics, finance and statistics to study uncertainfuture events, especially those of concern to insurance companies,employee benefits such as medical insurance and pension plans, andsocial welfare programs such as social security and Medicare.
Surprises abound on the list of course, such as Philosopher coming in at number 11. Last on the list, is the profession of being a roustabout, which if you are watching the TV series, Heroes, is what most of what the circus people are. A sad list to be sure as all the fun jobs are the ones near the end of the list. For example, actors, disk jockeys, newspaper reporters, firefighters and police all come in the bottom 25.

(S07E01) "What are you gonna do when it all catches up with you?" - Sean
With only eight episodes left in Nip/Tuck's run, I know I'm not alone in hoping that Ryan Murphy and Co. have a solid plan for ending what's arguably been one the most groundbreaking shows of the past decade. Don't forget -- season one nabbed the Golden Globe for best drama. It's not that the show has become less buzzworthy since its stellar freshman year, but in some regards the plots in subsequent seasons have always felt like something far more important was being put off. While entertaining, stories like The Carver or the organ smuggling ring have really just been diversions. What happened in last night's season seven premiere was a long time coming and it sets in motion a conflict that's been simmering since Sean and Christian bought all those spiral hams in the pilot episode.
