NEW @ TOOBWORLD CENTRAL

Sitting on my doorstep last night, waiting patiently for my retrieval as I left for work, was a package from Amazon, containing my latest additions to the DVD library here at Toobworld Central:

"The Borrowers", based on the books by Mary Norton and starring Eddie Albert, Tammy Grimes, and Edith Evans.

"The Littlest Angel" starring Johnny Whitaker, Fred Gwynne, Cab Calloway, Tony Randall, Connie Stevens, James Coco, John McGiver, Mary Jo Catlett, Lu Leonard, and EG Marshall.

and....

"The Pixar Short Films Collection" which contains all of the greats and then some - "Tin Toy" (my fave!), "Knick Knack" (a close second), "Luxo, Jr." "Geri's Game" and more!

TVXOHOF, MAY 2008: AND UP ROSE EMILY

Traditionally, May is the month during which we honor the women of Toobworld in the TV Crossover Hall of Fame. Queen of the May and all that, you see. And this May we want to pay tribute to a sultry sitcom star who passed away earlier this year. In another role, Suzanne Pleshette was the Queen of Mean, but as Emily Hartley she ruled equally with Bob Newhart in his eponymous series.

And with single appearances of perhaps just two minutes duration each, Emily Hartley was able to claim an entire sitcom and an episode of a variety show for herself to qualify for the Hall of Fame.

In the final episode of 'Newhart', we learned that the entire run of that sitcom was no more than a dream by Dr. Bob Hartley brought on by eating Japanese food late in the evening. And after Bob Newhart hosted 'Saturday Night Live' for a second time, we found out that actually it had been another dream by Dr. Hartley in which he capitalized on his resemblance to the comedian with the buttoned-down mind.

Both times Bob Hartley woke up from these experiences to find himself back home in his bed in Chicago, beside his beautiful wife Emily.

One added bonus, we got to meet Emily again in an off-year reunion special in which the old gang got together to reminisce. Although it was presented as a clip show in which they just had to be themselves and tape off the top of their head anecdotes, instead the actors stayed in character. And that's all it takes to make Suzanne Pleshette's character a member of the TV Crossover Hall of Fame.

From there, we can make hypothetical links for her charater outside of the Newhart-sphere. For instance, we could make the claim that when Emily Harrison (her maiden name) was at college studying to become a teacher, one of her classmates was John Novak (James Franciscus in 'Mr. Novak'). And then there are all the possibilities to be found in Chicago, characters that she may have known.....
It may not be the greatest of tributes to such a lovely person, but 'twill serve......

JVC Claims 8K x 4K D-ILA Projection Device

jvc.jpgJVC is claiming to have developed a new 1.75-inch LCOS-enabled D-ILA device that can project a 35-megapixel image, 8192 x 4320 pixels in all. The Super Hi-Vision device projects images at roughly 17 times the resolution of today's high-end projectors and HDTV's, the result of a new production process and pixel structure for finer pixel display. Not expected to hit the consumer market for a couple of years yet, we expect the new projection device will be expensive to say the least. To give you an idea of what we mean by expensive, take a look at the pricing of some of JVC's higher-end projection devices currently on the market: the DLA-HD1 projector based on a 0.7" 2K1K D-ILA chipset priced at $4600, the DLA-HD100 sells for about $6000, and the professional 4096x2400 pixel DLA-SH4K projector is priced at a whopping $142, 500. All's we have to say is that you better start saving your pennies.Via TGDaily
