Beverly Hillbillies: The Spears Edition

Remember when the big gossip about Britney was whether or not she had a breast augmentation after this Rolling Stone cover came out? Or when it was a big deal that she wasn't sleeping with Justin because she was saving her virginity for marriage?
Boy, I bet Lynne Spears is wishing that were the case now. Instead we have the tale of the Spears family, who found fame and fortune through their two teenage daughters and their sweet-as-pie Louisiana morals. Then Britney decided she had to grow up and change her image - with a flesh-colored bedazzler embroidered bra and panties on it.
Suddenly she was baring her midriff, wrapping snakes around her and singing songs about being a slave to love. Justin walked away from the relationship and Britney tore up the town.

But Lynne still had her wholesome daughter, Jamie Lynn, who was working for Nickelodeon and weaving her way into the hearts of America's youth on "Zoey 101."
You couldn't blame Lynne for one bad apple - blame it on child-star syndrome.

But then things just spun out of control. Brit married her back-up dancer, who's ex-girlfriend was pregnant with their second child. She got pregnant early and then followed it up quickly with a second one. She became the paparazzi's meal ticket - child in hand, latte in the next. Then the divorce and the ensuing custody battle.

Then Jamie Lynn announced at 16 that she was pregnant and keeping her baby. How could life get any worse for Lynne Spears?

Britney pulls a three-hour standoff with police and Kevin as she refuses to turn her sons over to her ex after a court-sanctioned visitation session. It's almost as if she needed the attention - her mother's attention and focus to circle back to her.

According to AP reports confirm that the 26-year-old pop star was taken to the hospital following the incident, but could not confirm if she was being held for a 72-hour psychiatric evaluation.

"Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance, but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.

"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.

Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.

"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.

Spears wasn't arrested in connection with the custody dispute, Aguirre said.

"There was no actual crime that was involved," the police spokeswoman said.

Kaplan said he went to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center after Spears was admitted there, but he declined to provide any details about the pop star, her ex-husband, or their two sons." the AP is reporting.

A court commissioner Friday gave sole physical and legal custody of the former couple's two little boys to Federline and suspended the troubled pop star's visitation rights.

I'm still hoping a former child star support group will hold an intervention for her. Bonaduce?

TV Remakes We'd Like To See, Vol. 1: 'Gilligan's
Island'

It seems that these days television has been hurting for some new show ideas, and with recent remakes of old shows like Battlestar Galactica (huge hit!) and The Bionic Woman (tanked!) we thought we'd come up with some of our own ideas for remakes, complete with new casts but the same 'ol plot lines. Well, maybe we'd update the plots to reflect the times...[...] Read more!

I'm looking forward to the round of Presidential debates this weekend, but still can't get over the gall - and slap in the face of the American people - of ABC and Fox News not including some of the lower-tier candidates. In ABC's case, the most egregious[...]

Would You Want to See a Sequel to I Am Legend

The rumor mill is working overtime with folks chattering about a sequel to the recent box office smash hit I Am Legend. Apparently, the author of the book on which the movie is based, Richard Matheson sold the sequel rights to Warner Bros., so the studio is clearly interested in producing a second film.

No word on castings, however, and it's possible Will Smith wouldn't be involved. Would a sequel be as good without the first movie's star? What do you think?

Switch To All-Digital

"It?s coming sooner than you think.

As of Feb. 17, 2009, if you have an old (?analog?) TV and use an antenna (so that?s, what, five people?), you won?t be able to watch TV anymore unless you get a converter box. Seriously.

All ?full-power? TV stations in the U.S. will switch to all-digital broadcasting. So the feds are actually offering $50 coupons to anyone who needs to get a box. This doesn?t apply to anyone who has cable/satellite/pay service or a TV with a digital tuner."

"THE NAME NIELSEN MAY BE most closely associated with the medium of television, but it is the Internet--especially social forms of online media--that is having the greatest influence on the way the research and publishing giant delivers its own messages to the public. In its latest foray into online publishing, the Nielsen Co. has quietly launched the "Nielsen Blog," a new Web destination featuring the waxings and musings of its array of experts on marketing and media research topics. The first installment of the blog, located at blog.nielsen.com, delves into what arguably is the industry's biggest annual marketing and media event--the Super Bowl--and future iterations will focus primarily on other big cyclical events and topical issues. The next big focus is likely to be the Academy Awards, another event that draws on the vast arsenal of Nielsen advertising, media, marketing and entertainment data streams."

Survivor Picks Its Favorites

CBS has announced the 20 contestants for Survivor: Micronesia, the whopping 16th edition of the show. This time, the network is throwing in a pretty ridiculous twist: The 20 contestants are divided into tribes of 10 former castaways and 10 superfans. The tribes will be dropped on the Rock Islands of Micronesia, where I suppose we'll see if experience with Survivor's challenges outlasts crazy fandom.

I know Survivor isn't the must-see show it once was, but if any of you were fans back in the day, I'm wondering: Are these the "favorites" you would have picked to compete in this special edition? Personally, I wish they could have brought back some really old-school contestants; nobody on this list competed before the seventh season, and most are even more recent than that. To see which favorites have signed up to be cast away again, just
