The Academy's decision to cut the best reality show host Emmy from the prime-time telecast Aug. 29 and move it to the Creative Arts awards a week earlier means that Survivor host Jeff Probst will not be there to accept if he wins his third consecutive award. The Survivor Nicaragua production schedule was arranged so Probst could fly from Nicaragua to L.A. for the Emmys and return without his absence affecting the show, "but it's... keep reading »
The hosts of reality TV shows just can't get any respect it seems. Just two years after being welcomed into the fold at the Primetime Emmy Awards, they've been eliminated from it. Instead, the outstanding reality show host category has been consigned to the Creative Arts Emmys event and word is they're none too happy about it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, 'Survivor' host and nominee Jeff Probst -- who's won the award both years it's been given -- won't be attending the Creative Arts shindig as he'll be on location in Nicaragua. He said, "It's disappointing news. ... Collectively, this category represents several of the highest-rated and most popular shows on all of television."
Jen Bresnan, senior vice president, alternative programming at CBS Entertainment, went further: "It's the latest slap in the face to the genre. ... These shows have brought new and younger viewers to television, it's really a shame." Referring to reality shows' dominance in the ratings this summer, Bresnan added that: "If you count up all the viewers that those five shows with nominated hosts represent, that's 200 million viewers. ... My guess is that those 200 million viewers probably disagree with the academy's decision."
For many he'll always be Chief O'Brien, but Colm Meaney's moved on. According to deadline.com he's signed up to star opposite Anson Mount in AMC's new period drama, 'Hell on Wheels.'
The Dublin-born actor -- who was most recently seen in 'Get Him to the Greek' -- will play Thomas "Doc" Durant, a businessman determined to make his fortune building the transcontinental railroad. The character's described as being "a man of vision and a self-serving opportunist who is capable of 'creative financing.'"
One of the things that throws you about 'Louie' (Tuesdays at 11PM ET on FX) is that not every moment on the show is played for laughs. But many of those moments hold harsh emotional truths that can hit home if the circumstances are right.
When Louie's chore of a mother drops by for a surprise visit, barely acknowledging his kids ("Why are they here? I thought you got a divorce.") and complaining the entire time, Louie finally has a meltdown on her, even after she tells him the big news: at 70-plus years old, she's finally decided she's a lesbian.
Of course, Louie couldn't care less. "You invited the girls and I for Christmas, and we arrived to a darkened house. My girls spent Christmas in a Holiday Inn! Their present was a bag of M&Ms!"
So he gets up and tells his mother what every disenfranchised kid has ever wanted to say to their parents: "I don't love you." And he wasn't taking it back.
As you may have heard, two 'American Idol' judges -- Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres -- are leaving the show after this season. And some of the other judges may be replaced as well. People! We're facing a desperate lack of 'Idol' judges! How can we solve this pressing problem?
Well, fortunately, on 'The Kilborn File' (weeknights, 7PM ET on Fox), host Craig Kilborn swooped in to save the day. During his 'Power Panel,' Craig had several guest comedians suggest possible new alternate judges. Among their suggestions? Mel Gibson and Christopher Walken. (Mel was mentioned because the show needs someone "foreign ... and mean.")
Cool! Mel and Walken! Sort of pretty terrifying. That sounds like the worst/best series ever, but we would definitely at least check it out. Also, during the suggestion phase of the show, comic Kevin Pollak did his Christopher Walken impersonation, which was pretty good. ... But for the record, we still think that this is the best Walken impersonation of all time. We're just saying.*
We've been seeing Betty White everywhere lately, but at least Jay Leno showed us something new about her. The 'Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC) host unearthed a picture of the inimitable actress from the 1976 Primetime Emmy Awards, when she won for her supporting-actress role in 'Mary Tyler Moore.' (OK, so the image wasn't new, but a whole generation of TV fans has probably never seen her like this.)
"Now tell me about that dress," said Leno. "Ooo, it's Cleavage Betty, look at that!" White has a great comeback.
She also discussed the classy gift she received from a direct competitor, Tina Fey. Both women are Emmy nominees for hosting 'Saturday Night Live' last season.
On 'Late Night' (weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC), Jimmy Fallon unveiled a picture from 'The Washington Post' website of The Roots performing on Earth Day. So far, so good. But the caption misidentified Roots bassist Owen Biddle as Giovanni Ribisi.
Yeah, from that distance, he could pass as Ribisi's doppelganger. Still, an error is an error. (Plus, the actor already has a twin, though they are far from identical.)
No matter: Ribisi just happens to play the guitar. So to "make the fact work," Fallon suggested the 'Middle Men' star perform with the band. Biddle, dressed exactly like Ribisi, played beside him. And ya know what? Ribisi was actually pretty good.
