Review: It Felt Like A Kiss by Adam Curtis

it_felt_like_kiss.jpg
"And we are here as on a darkling plain; Swept with confused alarms of struggle and fight, Where ignorant armies clash by night." Adam Curtis is a genius. He's been making documentaries for television and leaving all destroyed in his wake. He's given us The Century of the Self, The Trap - What Happened to our Dream of Freedom, the incredible The Power of Nightmares and provided a short documentary which appeared in Charlie Brooker...

Monday 6 July: The week that TV fought back

206_street.jpg
There is, of course, nothing wrong with a bit of reality TV. It can be fun, even inspirational at times, but in recent years the summer schedulers have been afraid of putting on anything of value when Big Brother is around. It was just so big, so dominating, it was like the army of Mordor swarming over the lands of Middle Earth, razing everything in its terrifying path. Now, in the year 2009, the rest of TV is fighting back. It's time for proper TV to make a stand and, next week, it's setting out its stall and saying to things like Big Brother, "Come and have a go..."

TV Review: Psychoville, BBC Two, Thursday 2 July,
10pm

jelly_280x155.jpg
I'm really enjoying Psychoville - there's nothing quite like it on television at the moment (actually, apart from League Of Gentlemen, there has never been anything like it ever. Funny that) - but if there's one criticism it's that each episode so far has seemed almost like a sketch show. It takes a very skilled group of writers to fuse together myriad characters and storylines each week, and messrs Sheersmith and Pendleton have just about managed it. Now, with the third episode, we were treated to something a bit different - an episode pretty much dedicated to one character. And that character was bitter, one-armed children's entertainer, Mr Jelly.

Channel Surfing: "Robin Hood" Slain by BBC, Hulu
Plans September Launch in UK, Neil Patrick Harris to Host Emmys, and More

Welcome to your Friday morning television briefing. Hollywood seems more or less shut down already for the Fourth of July weekend, so just a few headlines this morning. The Beeb has confirmed that it will not be bringing back drama series Robin Hood for a fourth season. The series, which starred Jonas Armstrong in the title role, saw its viewership decline to roughly four million viewers during its third (and now final) season (compared to the 8.6 million who tuned in for the series premiere in 2006). For his part, Armstrong had made it clear that the third season would be his last, stating, "It's been a great thrill, a great ride, but you can't play one part forever." (BBC News)Hulu has announced plans to launch a UK-based online video service in September and has indicated that it is close to reaching content deals with local broadcasters after offering them equity stakes in the service as well as a share of advertising revenues. Rumors are swirling that Hulu has already approached ITV about a possible stake but that has yet to be confirmed. Service would feature more that 3000 hours of US programming as well as local-grown fare but, due to rights issues, some programs--such as The Simpsons and Heroes--would be unavailable as those rights are tied up elsewhere. (Variety)Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello is reporting that CBS and the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has reached a deal with How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris to host the 61st Annual...

TV Review: Celebrity Masterchef, BBC One,
Thursday 2 July, 8pm

rabbit.jpg
As much as I'm a fan of Masterchef in all its forms, this series of Celebrity Masterchef has, to me, dragged a wee bit. The standard of cooking has been pretty poor, but things are getting serious now - it's semi-final time and you can see everyone has got their game faces on. So did I. I haven't watched it for a week or so, so I was eager to see if things had progressed.

Vampire Rules - Angel Mention

USA Today has compared the vampire 'rules', between True Blood, Twilight, and Angel. He is definitely more 'old school.' What do you think of the differences between the portrayals? Should entertainment be able to so often change the way vamps work? Do the changes keep it interesting?

Emily Deschanel broke her toe

Emily Deschanel has apparently broken her toe. No, it's not a set injury (actors return next week for Season 5) but actually happened while stepping out of the bath. Much teasing ensues.

US Bones Season 4 DVD Release

Meant to post this yesterday...sorry!

The US Date for the Bones Season 4 DVD release is set: October 6, 2009.

Seems like there might not be any commentaries...

BOO! As AuntTerriP says, that's one of the best parts! If you could pick commentary pairings, who would you want to see? I personally loved the Emily/David commentary (who didn't?!) but also Hart/Barry. Any other cast-mates you'd love to hear dish about an episode?
