TV 101: How ESPN controls the world and what the
other networks can learn from it

Filed under: Sports, OpEd, TV 101, Reality-Free

ESPN is like the borg, only with more bald people. You're about to become a soccer fan.

I know you don't believe me. Hell, I'm not sure I believe me. After all, America has resisted soccer for going on 150 years. Crapping on soccer ranks right up there with eating horrible chain-restaurant food and producing slobs-versus-snobs camp movies as a quality that define us as Americans.

Further, you've heard this claim before: the "Grab your shin guards, soccer is about to be a hit in the US of A!" column has been written approximately 2.8 million times since the early '70s. Every time a new soccer league starts in this country, everyone rushes to be the first to write that America is about to become Uruguay North.

And yet, those leagues invariably crash and burn, WNBA-style. So what makes this time any different? Why will we finally care about something that we've gone out of our way to not care about for so long? What force is powerful enough to make that happen?

The most powerful force in the universe: ESPN.

Wentworth Miller goes from Prison Break to Law &
Order: SVU

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, OpEd, Law and Order, Casting, Reality-Free

wentworth_miller_prison_breakMore good news out of NBC's top drama. Wentworth Miller is guesting on Law and Order: SVU, and this time he's not going to be behind bars. The Prison Break actor will star in the September 23 premiere of Law and Order: SVU, which is kicking off its 11th season on the NBC.

Wentworth Miller's casting comes on the heels of NBC re-signing of Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni to two-year extensions as the show's mainstays, Detectives Benson and Stabler, as well as the return of Stephanie March as Alex Cabot and a four-show arc for Christine Lahti. I'd say that the powers-that-be are stacking the deck with prime talent to make sure Law and Order: SVU maintains its top quality status.

Hillary Duff on 'Gossip Girl'

Hillary Duff will be joining the cast of "Gossip Girl" in a guest-star appearance.

Duff will play "a movie star looking for a typical college experience" named Olivia Burke.  She'll enroll at NYU and room up with Vanessa (Jessice Szohr), the hipster from Brooklyn.

What drama will she cause?   Well since she's rooming with V, of course she'll be sparking up a little romance with Dan (Penn Badgley), the aspiring novelist.

"Gossip" returns with season three on September 14th and you can see Duff's entrance on October 5th.

Neil Patrick Harris Might Host Emmys

It's not official yet but chances are Neil Patrick Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" will be hosting the 61st annual Emmys this fall.

Harris himself has been nominated for 2 Emmys and recently (and successfully) hosted the Tony Awards last month and the TVLand Awards in April.

The Emmys will air on September 20th.  Hopefully Harris will bring in new viewers since the award show's ratings dropped to an all time low last year while others (Oscars, MTV Awards, etc) viewership's increased.

Fox to re-air Michael Jackson Simpsons episode

Filed under: Programming, The Simpsons, Video, Animation, Celebrities, Reality-Free

simpsons, michael jackson, stark raving dad, fox"Stark Raving Dad," the season three opener of The Simpsons, is a hilarious and heartwarming half-hour. It reminds me of the show's best days when it delivered that perfect blend of bizarre humor, social commentary and unexpected sweetness. I'll be one of the millions tuning in this Sunday when Fox re-airs the ep as a tribute to uncredited guest star Michael Jackson.

Like Joel reminded us last week, the King of Pop provided the voice for Leon Kompowsky, a large and loveable brick layer who says he is Michael Jackson. In the episode, Homer is charmed by Leon and brings him home from a mental institution, where the rest of the family eventually falls in love with him. The sweetest moment comes at the end when Leon and Bart perform a birthday song for Lisa.

Katie Holmes to Perform on 'So You Think You Can
Dance'

Yep, you read that right.  Katie Holmes thinks she's got the moves to show off on the reality hit "So You Think You Can Dance."

Holmes along with judges Nigel Lithgoe and Carrie Ann Inaba launched the new nonprofit Dizzy Feet and she'll be performing on the July 23rd show (also the 100th episode) in order to promote it.  The foundation supports dance education and dancers who can't afford training.

Holmes will be paying homage to Judy Garland with a "Get Happy" routine that she will both sing and dance.  The performance will be taped, not live.
