Mad News, June 30July 3, 2008

Lots and lots of news, so I’m posting before the holiday weekend eats all our brains.I just found this great interview with Christina Hendricks from June 28. My favorite part is that she doesn’t realize that Joan speaks in a higher voice than she does in real life. How funny! The New York Post has a [...]

More Emmy Chatter: The Comedy Acting Short Lists!

The Emmy nomination picture is really coming together now, thanks to the good folks over at Gold Derby. Yesterday, I shared what they dug up on the acting semifinalists in the drama categories, and now they've nearly rounded out their findings in the comedy categories (they have all the names but three of the lead comedy actors; I'll update when they release that info). As always, these lists aren't official-official, but Gold Derby knows its stuff.

So, that means it's time for another edition of SnubWatch: Who's the biggest omission from these lists? I'm a little surprised to see neither Becki Newton nor Michael Urie on the short lists, considering that their performances were often the funniest parts of Ugly Betty this season. Perhaps if my "More Marc and Amanda!" cries had been heeded earlier, voters could have seen their brilliance?

One observation: Overall, the comedy categories still draw very heavily from network TV, whereas half the actors in every drama category came from cable shows. I wonder if that will change in future years. Showtime has already announced a couple of new comedies in development, and I wonder if AMC or FX will give comedy a try next.

OK, enough setup! To see the nominees, just

Marriage of Rachel

Roberta said it first: Don loves Rachel.Until my DVDs came, I had only seen Marriage of Figaro once?the only episode of Mad Men for which that was true. So You Think You Can Dance: Top 14 Perform

Filed under: OpEd, Episode Reviews, So You Think You Can Dance

SYTYCD logo(S04E12) I'm filling in for Jason as he had some technical difficulties last night. So let's get right to it. Tabitha and Napoleon were helping out Mary and Nigel at the judges table. And thank goodness for that. I've been waiting to see someone else's hip-hop choreography. Theirs is very hit or miss for me.

We got to see fourteen routines tonight on So You Think You Can Dance as the seven couples appeared twice. I love when they move to this part of the competition. You get to see right away who has the determination, strength, and technical know-how to stay alive on this show.

And it was a night of crazy hair...

Could Criminal Minds be the next CSI

Filed under: Industry, Programming, Criminal Minds, Reality-Free

Criminal Minds castAfter the success of the CSI franchise, it's only natural that CBS would look at other shows on its lineup for spinoff possibilities. Oddly enough, the lucky show isn't World's Greatest Dog, but Criminal Minds. According to Executive Producer Ed Bernero, talks between CBS and ABC studios, who produces Minds, are currently underway, saying, "It's safe to say there will be something soon."

Because the Criminal Minds spinoff is still in the discussion phase, there's no news on exactly what the new show will entail. But, since there are obviously many more specialties within the FBI besides criminal profiling, chances are the new series will focus on one of those. As is the case with most spinoffs nowadays, the new series will probably be introduced via a "backdoor pilot" in an upcoming Criminal Minds episode.

What's next for Rachael Ray Her memoirs

Filed under: Food/Home/DIY, Celebrities, Talk Show, Reality-Free

Rachael Ray in chairAccording to that journalist without peer, Ted Casablanca -- yeah, I'm sure that's his real name -- Food Network diva and Emmy-winning talk show hostess Rachael Ray is working on a new project.

No, it's not a new cookbook or anything about food or travel, her two specialties on FN. Rachael Ray is writing her memoirs, the story of a kid from upstate New York who's made in big on TV.

Rachael, who turns 40 on August 25, has had a meteoric rise on TV, and as I wrote last week, she's one of five TV stars I think have exceeded expectations. In a very short time, she's become a force with which to be reckoned.

Weinstein e.mails ask L'Oreal for $6-8 million to
sponsor Runway, say Tresemme is out

A Village Voice reporter found documents from Harvey Weinstein in a recycling bin on the street, and among those documents are e.mail messages about sponsorships for Project Runway 6--including a sponsored challenge. They suggest that L'Oreal was offered full sponsorship of hair and makeup because Tresemme is out for that season, the first that will air on Lifetime. One e.mail message "was sent May 26 to several people at by Lori Sale, a former Weinstein Company employee now at the Paradigm agency," the Village Voice reports. The message mentions "tresemme's feeling that they are being iced out of season 6,"...
