Once A Hero

Once A Hero

Sept 1987-Oct 1987, ABC 8:00

001 Believers
002 Triangle
003 The Return of Lazarus
004 Things Get Ugly
005 Manos Arriba, Mrs. Greely
006 Remember The Cottonwood
007 Thank You, Captain Justice

Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows: The first cancellation of the 1987-1988 season was this fantasy-adventure about a cartoon superhero who crossed the "Forbidden Zone" into the real world because he feared his comic strip was about to be canceled. Captain Justice (and his alter ego, mild-mannered professor Brad Steele) hoped to revitalize his creator, legendary cartoonist Abner, with real-world adventures. However, he found that once he was here his super-powers didn't work; no crashing through walls, no deflected bullets, and no one awed by his bright red tights. Cartoon detective Gumshoe (that's right, floppy hat, Sam Spade sneer) also came from fictional Pleasantville into the real world to help Justice battle such adversaries as Max Mayhem and Lobsterman, but it was all uphill. Emma was a suspicious newspaper reporter, and Woody her 12-year-old son.
Once A Hero was cancelled after only three weeks, before an already-filmed episode guest starring Adam West ("Batman") could even air. It's tough in the real world. - Tim Brooks and Earle Marsh

Total Televison: Only three episodes of this hour comedy-adventure series were shown. Its premise was interesting - a comic-book superhero decides to cross the "Forbidden Zone" into the real world after realizing that that people weren't reading his comics anymore. Featured were Captain Justice (the Crimson Crusader), who learned to his surprise after crossing the zone that he had no superpowers in the real world; Gumshoe, the private eye who accompanied Justice from the comic book world; cartoonist Abner Bevis, their creator; nosy reporter Emma Greely; Emma's young son, Woody; and Captain Justice's girlfriend, Rachel Kirk, who also crossed the "Forbidden Zone." Dusty Kay created the series. - Alex McNeil

TV Guide Guide To TV: A superhero (Captain Justice) crosses the "Forbidden Zone" of his comic strip into the real world, hoping to rekindle readers' fading interest in him. Trouble is, he has no powers in his new environment. Few viewers cared: only three episodes aired. - The Editors Of TV Guide

Spike to do MXC, the original, not the ripoff,
this weekend

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Programming, OpEd, Game Show

MXC is not a ripoffSpike TV is calling this holiday weekend, "MXC, The Original, Not the Ripoff, Weekend." On July 5th and 6th the network will be paying homage to Spike's original series based on a Japanese game show. Wait, so doesn't that make Spike's show the ripoff of the Japanese show? Maybe not. MXC uses real footage from the reality game show Takeshi's Castle and creates a whole new comedic storyline.

Spike TV makes sure to point out that MXC is not dubbed or a literal translation of Takeshi's Castle. The show is written and voiced by the following actors: Victor Wilson, Christopher Ranga, Mary Scheer, and John Cervenka.

Try to keep up ... Kim Kardashian is launching a
perfume line

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Industry, OpEd, Celebrities, Super Skank Wednesday

Kim making her smelly juice. Fans of skanktastic television will love this news. Kim Kardashian and her ass, both stars of E!'s Keeping Up with the Kardashians, are launching a line of perfume. She announced this news on her blog, which, by the way, is one of my favorite blogs. It's wonderfully delusional and self-congratulatory.

I'll indulge you in a sample, "It has always been a dream of mine to start my own perfume business, since I love to mix fragrances together and come up with new and different scents! I hope you understand my total excitement as I let you, the readers of my blog, become the first to know that I am creating my own fragrance!!!" I love the emboldened words and gratuitous use of exclamation points.

TLC has a new docu-series

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Programming, OpEd, Documentary

Must Love KidsTLC has a new docu-series (that's a fancy name for "reality show") called Must Love Kids. On this show, TLC will follow three moms as they enter the daunting world of dating as a single mother. The three mothers who currently balance their careers and raising their children will step out of their comfort zones to date and maybe even find a lifelong partner.

Not so sure about this show. According to the press release, "With an estimated 10.4 million single mothers in the U.S., these three single moms will undoubtedly inspire others to take the initiative and focus on their own happiness." I don't like the assumption here. All single moms are miserable and don't focus on their own happiness? Therefore, all single moms need to learn to be happy so they can secure another mate? Maybe I'm being too harsh though. I generally like TLC's programming. (I changed dinner reservations once while vacationing in Hawaii with my husband because American Choppers wasn't over yet.)

What do you think? Would you watch this show?

Must Love Kids premieres July 15th at 9:00 p.m. ET / PT on TLC.

Weeds at 4.3: Nancy by the Endless Sea

A more serious bunch of Weeds this fourth season, I think, now past Episode 3.

The most dramatic and also profound part of the plot concerns Judah's mother, hooked up to machine, in a coma, tended by Judah's father, Len, aka Albert Brooks. She mutters in Episode 2, in Yiddish, that she doesn't want to live, and this sets most of the family off on a debate as to whether to kindly put her out of her misery. Andy leads the arguments for yes, Silas is the most opposed. The Andy Ayes eventually carry the day, and appoint Nancy (of course) to the task.

Nancy shuts off the machine via turning off circuit breakers - but, miraculously, grandma keeps breathing! I was glad to see that.

Meanwhile, Nancy's being tested as a runner to Mexico, the Feds finally believe Celia that Nancy's the drug runner, and some kind of crisis is clearly brewing, but it's still a little too soon to tell what.

But I'm enjoying Nancy and her family by the sea - not to mention Len v. Andy - and looking forward to maybe even grandma now playing an active role! Intimations of immortality...

crappy cellphone photos of the brilliant Mad Men

Deborah quoted this section from the Brandweek piece:There will be some high-profile stunts and outdoor ads that look to spur water cooler chatter. The shuttles between Grand Central Terminal and Times Square in New York will become Mad Men set pieces, with the interiors decorated to evoke Draper?s early 1960s world of men in fedoras [...]
