One of the biggest Emmy snubs ? now two years running! ? is the exclusion of Connie Britton for her pitch-perfect performance as Tami Taylor in Friday Night Lights. For two years, she's played Tami's highs (helping troubled Tyra get her act together) and lows (slapping daughter Julie outside after a particularly troublesome act of teen rebellion) with just the right balance of drama and humor ? and, when season three begins, she'll find Tami in a demanding new job.
At NBC's party at the TCA press tour, I stole a few minutes with Britton, who was just back from a trip to Uganda and Kenya with One and the Africa Children's Choir. Despite jet lag ? and the fact that I was the only person between her and a glass of wine ? Britton was still incredibly gracious in our chat (just as I'd always suspected she'd be). The first question is a wee bit spoilery, but if you want to see the highlights, just

(S01E08) Well, first off I have to give props to the make-up and effects departments. In some prior episodes there have been some pretty awkwardly awful effects scenes ("Eater" when her arm is bitten), but throughout this episode, the make-up on Doug Jones (the Hellboy movies) was just astounding. It's interesting to me that at the NBC website and everywhere I can look, Jones is the only principal listed for this show.Continue reading Fear Itself: Skin and Bones

Add to myYahoo!Like an orphan without a storm, I found another package sitting on my doorstep last night as I was heading out to meet my buddies in the Bit Torrent Rebel Alliance. My latest delivery?
'JAMES MICHENER'S "CENTENNIAL"'
This ranks right up there as one of my five favorite TV Westerns of all time. I remember when it came out in the mid-1970s, I would rush back to my dorm from whatever rehearsal I was involved in at the time to see the latest installment. (I think it was airing on NBC on either Wednesdays or Thursdays....)
I had all but the first two hours on videotape, but now - at last! - it's on DVD.
Oh. Sure. You want to know my five favorite TV Westerns now, right?
1) 'The Wild, Wild West'
2) 'Maverick'
3) 'Alias Smith And Jones'
4) 'Centennial'
5) 'The Adventures Of Brisco County Jr.'
Yeeha!

So there I was, sitting in the last aisle seat of the last row on my Southwest flight back to Baltimore. I was tired, hungry, grumpy, and the handle on my suitcase broke. Yet, there was a feeling of accomplishment that enveloped me as my plane lifted off the runway from San Diego International Airport and my first trip to Comic-Con International officially ended.
At least I thought it was accomplishment I was feeling. As I awaited the desperately small morning meal provided by the flight attendants (a six-pack of cheese crackers), I contemplated the feelings I had about the convention. On the one hand, I did feel accomplished, because I was able to see and report on so many television-related panels that I, and well as readers of TV Squad, were interested in knowing about. On the other hand, I was feeling a bit disappointed that I didn't make all of the panels I wanted to nor spend more time on the ginormous exhibit floor. On the third hand, I was angry at the way the convention organizers handled the whole thing -- preventing a good many fans of various television shows to wait on long lines without even getting close to the door that led to the hallway, that led to the ballroom, where their panel was being held.
So, you could say that I had a feeling of disappointed accomplishment tinged with anger. Plus, soft pretzels were $4 a piece at the convention center, which would piss anyone off!

August is the month when Summer comes to a close and entertainment-land gets a case of the doldrums. It's typically slow for music releases, and Hollywood doesn't necessarily put out the year's best films this month either. But that doesn't mean there aren't a few good gems out there that you'll want to get your hands on this month. To see what I uncovered, hit "Start."Start Slideshow
